Why do we get distracted? Most people will tell you that action is driven by carrots and sticks -- the pursuit of pleasure and the avoidance of pain. However, neurologically speaking, it’s all about the avoidance of discomfort. This is easy to understand on a physiological level. We eat because we’re hungry. We sleep because we’re tired. We put on a jacket because we’re cold. But this is also true on a psychological level. What do we do when we’re lonely? We check Facebook. What do we do when we’re uncertain? We Google. What do we do when we’re bored? We watch Netflix or go to Reddit. This is important to understand because if all human behavior is motivated by a desire to escape discomfort, that must, therefore, mean that time management is pain management. I recently appeared on the PM For The Masses podcast where I talked to Cesar Abeid about the tactics we can all use to control our attention and live with integrity. I’ve included a link to the episode in the comments below. Tag somebody who would benefit from hearing this message! #Indistractable #Productivity #TimeManagement
