Have smartphones made our kids more distracted than ever before? Not exactly. To understand why, it’s helpful to take a look back. Throughout history, we’ve always felt as if advances in tech are controlling our children. When I was growing up, it was video games. Before that, it was television. Before that, it was radio. New developments in technology have always brought a sense of panic. New technology and new methods of entertainment are only proximate causes of distraction and prevent us from addressing the real issue. Our kids are overusing technology as an escape, but we need to ask ourselves, what are they escaping from?
