When attempting to understand the causes of distraction, it’s incredibly easy to assign blame to technology. A quick Google search will turn up countless headlines: “Technology is driving us to distraction” “Smartphones make people distracted and unproductive” “Why we're living in a dark age of technological distraction” The truth is that digital distraction is a symptom, not the sickness. When we put all the blame on tech, the root causes stay hidden. Unless we deal with the root causes of our distraction, we'll continue to find ways to distract ourselves.
