When it comes to changing our behavior, one of the mistakes people make is not focusing on consistency over intensity. People who want to read more buy eight novels in one go. People who want to eat healthier go to the store and get three weeks’ worth of tofu and sprouts. People who want to get in shape, sign-up to run a marathon despite the fact they can’t yet run a mile. To change the way we behave, we tend to go all out all at once. We think, “this change is important to make, so I’m going to do everything I can to make it happen right now.” What we don’t realize is that behavior change is more of a process than it is a destination. If you haven’t read regularly or eaten healthy years and years, it’s very difficult to maintain that level of intensity over the long-term. Especially when the benefits of these improved habits aren’t immediately visible and can often take years to observe. Yes, the most well-read people can finish a 500-page book in a couple of days and the healthiest eaters can meal plan weeks ahead. They didn’t get there overnight. More than anything, consistency makes behavioral change successful. Starting with something you can manage and scaling from there will yield the best results in the long run. #BehaviorChange
