Think distraction is a new problem caused by modern technology? Think again! History is littered with examples of people trying to escape distraction. In 1925, Hugo Gernsback published a design for “The Isolator”, a helmet that blocked out distractions so the wearer could focus on their work. In addition to being super creepy, The Isolator never took off because it didn’t address the root cause of distraction. Similarly, today’s tech critics advocating for abandoning digital devices are missing the point. External triggers are only part of the problem.
