Habits are like pearls. Oysters create natural pearls by accumulating layer upon layer of something called mother-of-pearl, eventually forming the smooth treasure over several years. What causes the pearl to begin forming? The arrival of a tiny irritant, such as a piece of grit. This triggers the oyster’s system to begin blanketing the invader with layers of shiny coating. Similarly, new habits need a foundation upon which to be built. Triggers provide the basis for sustained behavioral change, as shown in the Hooked Model below. Both internal and external triggers already exist in your daily life, whether in the obvious form of a morning alarm clock or in the more subtle form of emotional signals within us. Triggers are the actuators of behavior, whether we are cognizant of them or not. They move us to take action. Habits are not created… they are built upon. #InternalTriggers #HookedModel #BehaviorChange #HabitForming
