We are not “addicted” to technology - and it is dangerous and highly problematic to say so. I’m fascinated by the way technology influences, informs, and even designs our behavior. I am aware of the ethical implications of technology’s permeation into our daily lives. Like any superpower, there is a level of responsibility that should come with building as well as using technology. While it is easy to blame the companies making the products that distract us, we must be cautious so that we avoid giving them any more power than they deserve. While the fact that these products exist isn’t our fault, managing their use is our responsibility. I’ve worked in this space since 2008 and have become acutely aware that this affects my own life too. I was checking my phone while spending time with my daughter. However, the idea that we are all “addicted” to technology is rubbish.. Addiction is a pathology and it’s not the same thing as overuse. In my upcoming book, Indistractible (link in comments!), I reveal the Achilles’ heal of distraction that I learned as an industry insider. The fact is, we’re much more powerful than we think. #Hooked #Indistractable #BehaviorChange #Technology
