As my friend David Brier likes to say, you have two choices: pivot or perish. Use this unprecedented time to reinvent yourself to be better positioned for success. Here’s how: First, get comfortable with change. Though it may seem obvious, to embrace the new, you need to let go of the past. Reframe this pivot as an opportunity for growth. Shift your mindset to envision what might be and more easily welcome new outcomes. Next, observe what’s going on in the marketplace—and what could be. Listen to what your clients, customers, and colleagues are talking about amidst the COVID-19 crisis—what do they need, and what are they struggling with? Can you deliver your services in a new way? Are there new uses for your product? In the business world, it’s the juxtaposition of ideas that can create an entirely new category, product, or service. And it’s that innovation that fuels success. Finally, get your story straight so that you can address current needs. When you’re reinventing yourself, let clarity be your friend; pare down your messaging to align and support your new offering and positioning.
