Seth Godin believes that the two things matter most—in business, life, and #thoughtleadership —are #attention and #trust , and they’re connected in a virtuous cycle: You don’t get attention unless you’re trusted, and you’re not trusted unless you get attention. Here’s how to gain both: Differentiate between good & bad attention Before you do something that will shine a spotlight on you, make sure it’s something that aligns with your beliefs, and will be positively received. Don’t try to game the system Godin advises against using a power play to try to influence people; you can’t hustle your way into seducing people who’ve never heard of you. Be generous Those with a service mindset connect most easily to others because they offer value with no strings attached, and ultimately make the biggest impact. You can’t be selfish Lose the tit-for-tat mentality—no one owes you anything. But if you freely share your wisdom, those who follow you are going to tell their friends about you, giving you more attention and chances to be generous. Earn them through kindness & respect Ours is an age where attention is precious, and trust has been abused. When you treat others’ attention with kindness and earn their trust every day, they’ll want to hear what you have to say. #leadership
