Today it’s Thanksgiving in the United States, a day when we give thanks for the goodness in our lives. I feel so blessed to have amazing family and friends, some with whom I’ll be spending the day. I’m grateful for my good health and well-being, and for the opportunity to partner with fantastic clients to put my creative talents to their highest and best use. But if I’m being honest, I’m thankful for the not-so-good stuff too. You know, the disappointments, the lost business, the awful news, and the challenges of 2020 that sometimes make me want to give up. But I don’t. Having the contrast between life’s highs and lows helps me cherish the good even more, and reminds me that nothing—but change—is certain. FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTHS AND UNIQUE ABILITIES Being bogged down in busy work and looking to ‘busyness’ to demonstrate your value does not work. Focus on your strengths and unique abilities and invest time on activities tied to both.

Given how awful most administrative software used by large companies is, and how insanely bureaucratic many processes are, I do wonder why and how to change it. The nicest explanation is that senior executives don't book their own travel, do their own timesheets, claim their own expenses, plan their own meetings, so they just don't care nor feel the pain. The other is that senior staff like the ego boost of having assistance. If doing the basic admin of life didn't take so long, if you just booked flights directly on Kayak, the business case to look important would be removed. I've worked at companies where booking a $80 per night hotel room could be done on Hotel Tonight in 2 seconds, but where instead we were forced to use massive travel companies, have 20 email exchanges, and an approval process, in order to book the same room for $250. News headlines of upcoming funding or an M&A or even an IPO, are not always factually accurate. There is a tendency to report every rumor. And occasionally, it is clearly leaked by companies themselves! Is it worth it? I know that there is a prevailing opinion among some that any coverage is good coverage. I don’t think so at all. Let me share a direct experience. A couple of years ago, I met a founder at a coffee shop, it was the first casual meeting and nothing more. The company was very early, but I left with a favourable impression that the founder was motivated. A few days later, I saw a short news item that Kalaari Capital was funding this company to the tune of $5M. I was a bit surprised, because we had no follow-on discussion post our first meeting. When I called the founder, he acknowledged leaking it to the press to create interest amongst other VCs who might then actively pursue him. This is very short-sighted.
