The decline of startups in the US is troubling. Who knew startups are just as important to the New Zealand economy as to the American economy? Great data from Brookings Institution and New York Times.

Random Friday thought: One of the best parting gifts you can give a colleague is a polite and professional reply when they send a goodbye email. This is your chance to strengthen your relationship with them, affirm and thank them for their contributions, and earn trust going forward. It also gives your outgoing colleague reassurance, encouragement and respect. Keep it simple, keep it classy. I've seen this rule violated with snarky comments and remarks, or worse. For the person on the receiving end of the response, who is probably going through very mixed emotions as they depart one job and embark on another, this can be at best insulting and at worst devastating to a professional relationship. Professional networks are an incredibly powerful thing, with first and last impressions having an enormous impact. When a colleague departs, take the time to properly recognize them and say "thank you". You never know when you'll see them or need them again. #leadership #dobetter …see more

Productive habits don’t just appear out of thin air. They are created by assembling a chain of individual behaviors. Over time, these behaviors change our daily actions and in turn, our lives. Productive habits move us to our full potential, morph us into the people we want to become, and ultimately give us the life we want. #Growth #GoalSetting #Structure …see more

If you want to accomplish everything you intend to, you CAN'T use a to-do list. To-do lists are great in theory, but they force you to prioritize the easy and urgent tasks over the important ones. Prezi recently launched a new video tool and invited me to try it out and speak on a technique called timeboxing. Timeboxing is the practice of planning out exactly how you're going to use your time each day. Have to work on a project? Schedule time for it. Need to spend time with the family? Set aside time in your calendar. Want to read or exercise more? You have to make time to. In the video below, I discuss three reasons why to-do lists stink and how timeboxing can help us use our time effectively and live our personal values 👇 A huge shoutout to Lorraine K. Lee and the folks at Prezi for giving me this opportunity! #Indistractable #Timeboxing #Scheduling #Productivity …see more

I found an old photo today 👇🏽 I was holding a jar of change and the text said, "all the money you have as of 2/4/17." I remember I used to walk along the river whenever things were bad and say to myself "things are going to get better". And now that they have gotten better (definitely still not perfect), it's fascinating looking back on those old videos and my mental state in those moments. 🖖🏽 You learn a lot about yourself and give others the opportunity to do the same. I get messages from people saying that they just "binge watched" the last three years of my life. 🖖🏽 Highlighting a path for others that have similar goals and challenges. It's also proof that you put in the work. 🖖🏽 Not only does it help you build a brand but it also humanizes that brand. Hands down the best decision I ever made when I was first getting started was the fact that I kept a video and written journal. Saying that it changed my life would be an understatement. If you're not already – document. And thank you Martin for being you and for being one of the first people to believe in me. I'm going to push myself to collaborate more like I used to. And give back to the people that were there for me when I first started. Who should I collab with? #justQ 🖤 …see more

The Weekly Look Ahead for the Global Economy and Markets This will not be a quiet August week for data and other economically-relevant developments! A slew of numbers will shed light on manufacturing activity in Europe and the US; Target and Walmart 's earnings will speak to the health of retail; and Fed minutes may provide more indications as to possible next steps with respect to QE and forward guidance. Also worth watching: The balance between more Covid-related re-openings (e.g., UK) and creeping border restrictions in Europe as a whole; and In the US, the tone of the Democrat national convention. Wishing you all a productive and healthy week. #economy #markets #covid …see more

How would you react if a drunk stranger suddenly rushed you at work? That's the situation singer Celine Dion had to deal with during a recent performance at Caesar's Palace. During the middle of her concert, an intoxicated fan rushed the stage and managed to get right next to the singer. The woman then resisted security guards' attempts to remove her. In the next few minutes, Dion demonstrates the remarkable power of emotional influence. #growth #emotionalintelligence #EI #EQ #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou #leadership #management …see more

The real sign that your innovation is "disruptive" is if you face entirely different problems. The iPhone had to get people to buy phones for $1000 Tesla has to build out a charging network. Netflix has to renegotiate the entire world of "mechanical rights" Uber spent more on Legal fee's than licenses. Etc. …see more

What would you be doing if you weren't doing what you're doing now? An interesting question to ask friends, acquaintances...and most importantly, yourself. Some of us continue in jobs when they really want to write novels, travel, sing. Just for now, put aside the financial consideration, and share what you would be doing. I've shared in this video - that LinkedIn kindly invited me for as part of being in the #LinkedInPowerProfile list. Thank you all for putting me there. #LPP2018 #InItTogether …see more

I wrote Hooked to explore the ways companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram built habit-forming products that transformed the world. But I didn’t write the book for them, I wrote it for you! The goal of the book was to democratize the techniques tech companies have used for years. It shouldn’t just be the Silicon Valley giants who can get build habits in people’s lives. What if we could use those same techniques to help people accomplish their goals and live by their values? That’s exactly what’s happened! The book has been used by companies in nearly every industry. • Kahoot uses the Hooked model to get kids hooked to learning. • Fidbod uses the model to hook people to health and fitness. • I even taught The New York Times how to use it to keep people engaged with their news app. There are all kinds of ways we can use the techniques that create habit-forming products to build healthy habits in peoples’ lives. I recently talked with Shannon Waller on the Team Success Podcast about Hooked, Indistractable, and more! I’ve included a link to the episode below! #Hooked #Indistractable #Values …see more

Hey there, stranger. It's been a while! In continuing my 20 Tips in 2020 series, Here is Tip 8! So what are some of the secret ingredients in building a strong personal brand? Consistency is definitely a must-have. If you drop your engagement and content sharing on social media, you'll see a direct correlation in your lead gen/nurture results. According to Harvard Business Review, it takes 5 - 7 impressions to remember a brand and those leads developed through social media convert 7 TIMES MORE FREQUENTLY than other leads! I haven't posted a video in over a month because every time I do, my inbox is flooded with leads and it takes a while to catch up 😉🔥 So what are you waiting for?! Build your personal brand and start creating... Two of the most consistent personal brands I see on here include fellow Wisco natives, Shay ☀️ Rowbottom and Quentin Allums . Who else is consistently showing up and generating results? Shoot me a message or email if you need help to build your personal brand for ultimate results. #PersonalBranding #SocialMedia #Sales …see more
