This stark US contrast -- between California where the governor has shut beaches still open and Texas is reopening movie theaters -- is a good illustration of the "natural experiment" that, over next few weeks, should provide insights not only on health issues but also consumer and corporate behavior in this "new, new normal." #coronavirus #covid19 #covid #economy #health #consumption #production #consumers #producers …see more
Keep these charts in mind as some oil traders lick their wounds (or worse)/rest of us wonder about collateral damage. Despite worsening supply fundamentals, buyers responded to the decline in the value of the oil ETF by pouring money into it, setting up for an historic debacle ahead of the contract roll. #oil #markets #investing …see more

My six year old daughter asked me, “What’s so great about the United States anyway?” And I didn’t know what to say to her. I’m from the US. But there’s many problems in how the US plays out its role both at home and in the world. How to answer about a country that engages in horrific wars, had slaves, has a 15% poverty rate, and yet has always called itself “the land of opportunity” and with reason. …see more
Taiwan is one of the greatest economic stories in the world. Today it’s the 22nd largest economy globally. It’s one of the largest exporters in the world. And it controls the fifth largest foreign exchange reserves. Yet Taiwan is falling behind. If you look at labor productivity, Taiwan lags behind the US, Japan, and other similar economies. Even high tech, Taiwan’s leading sector, lags behind other major economies in terms of labor productivity. In this short video, Albert Chang, Managing Partner of McKinsey Taiwan, explains why he believes Taiwan needs nothing less than a digital revolution to revitalize its economy. #Taiwan #digital #economy …see more
"Most people have never REALLY been listened to" Heard this on a podcast recently with a hostage negotiator and really made me think.
I spent some time in Sweden recently. ALL the people I met all were very happy with their approach. There was more altered behavior in Sweden than the media would make you believe, lots of social distancing, closed Universities, but all done in a reasonable fashion. Even the messaging was done in a spirited way, with large sparkly stickers saying "YES!" on train seats where you were able to sit. The behavior changes came about by informing people, and assuming that the vast majority of people will behave sensibly when trusted. At the end of their long summer, there was palpable excitement at the start of a normal life, but also more mask-wearing than what I saw in Denmark. One thing I'll never understand is why Sweden was one of few nations to follow the long-standing plans Governments had long had in place. They screwed up Care Homes, but the plan to focus only on protecting the vulnerable was the action plan all countries had long had for conditions of this level of contagion and severity. https://lnkd.in/dzMEkvH …see more
The 2nd "Interesting People in Interesting Times' event I'm hosting is kicking off on July 28th, New York, in the MadeinNY Media center. Here 8-14 people will talk passionately about interesting things to them and we will just have a nice big chat. I may have a go, or just be the MC, or cower in the corner looking worried. The loose theme is "future nostalgia". Buy tickets now, so I don't worry. I never ask for engagement, but please like or share this even if you can't come, so it reaches a lot of nice and sparky people. https://lnkd.in/d47ytFv …see more
For #ThrowbackThursday , I'm remembering the history lesson I received on July 4th, 2018, from the legend herself, Edna Adan Ismail . I still get chills recalling her stories of growing up in #Hargeisa #Somaliland with her beloved father Adan Ismail, moving to London to train as a nurse and a midwife, marrying the man who would become Prime Minister, losing everything during the brutal war years, becoming her country's first female Foreign Minister, returning home after retirement to build a maternity hospital. Viewing her photo albums, realizing that she was probably the one of first women of African descent to be feted at a White House State Dinner, I was filled with awe. Her grace, poise and charm overwhelms you, but her fierce intellect, strength and determination empowers you. My life has been changed in the year since I met The Mother of Somaliland. She is the Mother, Mentor and Role Model that everyone should be so blessed to have. I never had that Father figure growing up. And I’m not saying that to be down, I’ve just never had that. As kids we looked out for one another. We did what we had to do to survive. And for that I appreciate my dad. His absence taught us how to take care of ourselves. How to make shit happen on our own. How to survive. And I’m thankful for that. Because while we are building our new company, some days I feel like I’m on top of the world. Some days I feel like I’m about to be laid out by a bus. Some days it feels like I was laid out by a bus. But it’s a survivor's game. And I’ve been playing it my entire life. #justQ 🖖🏽🖤 📸 Willie Morris …see more
To me, writing isn’t about writing; it’s about listening. About paying attention to what’s said and unsaid. Noticing details others miss. Providing a safe space for others to share. It’s about observing. Questioning. Being insanely curious. Empathetic. Having an insatiable desire for knowledge, wanting to learn more and dive deeper to unearth new ideas and experiences. To discover out-of-this-world places. To shine a light on amazing, everyday people who don’t yet realize their brilliance. It’s about finding synergies between seemingly disparate things to create something even better. It’s about challenging perceptions and being open to infinite possibilities. It’s about being inspired and aspiring to inspire others. It’s about the thinkers, the dreamers, the misfits, and the creatives who bravely choose to blaze new trails. It’s about positive transformation. It’s about communicating. It’s about collaborating. It’s about sharing. And more than anything, it’s about the awesome power of connection. So really, for me, it’s all about YOU. #listening #writing #connection …see more
Here are 24 suggestions* to help you leap into a better career: 1. Let it go Let go of those people and things that support your history, not your destiny. 2. Here are five reasons why saying yes is one of the best decisions you can make for your career: 1. It opens you up to new challenges and opportunities. If you wait until you feel ready to pursue an opportunity, chances are it’ll pass you by. Saying yes means that you’re open to moving past your comfort zone and embracing a new challenge. 2. It invites collaboration. There’s a reason improvisation is rooted in the phrase, “Yes, and...” Unlike no, which shuts down conversations and progress, saying yes opens up positive possibilities and invites others to build together, fostering collaboration, partnership, and further discussion. 3. It empowers and affirms others. As a leader, choosing to say yes acts as an affirmation to others and their ideas: I hear what you just said. You’re paying attention, and they matter. And giving the green light signals trust, which empowers others. 4. It creates an environment where it’s safe to try, fail, learn, and innovate. When you freely say yes, you create a risk-tolerant environment. You encourage innovation by trying new things and using the successes and failures as learning opportunities. 5. It makes life more fun. Saying yes can bring you new sources of joy and lead you on an incredible adventure. #leadership #career #growth …see more
