We used to be racing to put a man on the moon. Now we race to build walls. What happened to the western world's ambition.? These are sad times. Where is the hope and drive for progress in the world? Increasingly in China.
One of the silliest predictions I routinely see about media, is that we will be consuming even more of it from every year from now. I firmly believe that the smartphone has created new incremental media moments, but we're now at peak media. We may be more prevalent to having more media on at the same time from now, but our attention can't add up to more. It's all about replacement of attention now, not creation of incremental moments. …see more

The 15 journalists who attended the #DeliverForGoodKENYA journalism workshop in #Nairobi typify the very best of #AfricanJournalism . Their commitment to building their expertise is second only to their boundless energy and capacity to endure great challenges for the sake of their communities and their country’s development. The men and women who participated in yesterday’s workshop eagerly demonstrated their grasp of the upcoming #Gender Rule vote in #Kenya . My goal was to help unlock the stories they should be telling about the importance of #womensleadership and participation in progressive national development. These young #journalism leaders make me confident that there will be solid, contextual reporting about #genderequality in the coming days. #Africa #TwoThirdsNOW FIDA KENYA FEMNET - African Women's Development and Communication Network #GROOTSKenya #globaldevelopment #journalismtraining …see more
On United Nations #WorldChildrensDay, another image from July 7th, 2007, at an Internally Displaced Persons camp in Northern #Uganda. I wonder where these defiantly jubilant boys are today. I wonder if they are even still alive. And I wonder if they achieved the peace and victory that their little fingers were telegraphing to me in this moment. Then I focus on the girl with the baby on her hip. I wonder if she grew to have children of her own, or if she died of a preventable disease or bled out during early childbirth. And then I try not to see the sadness, the seeming exhaustion, on the face of the infant. No baby should bear that crushing weight. This is where and when I changed. …see more

“Daddy?” she queried. “Just a second,” I grunted. “I need to respond to one thing.” My eyes were glued to my phone, my fingers tapping away, writing a response. I wish I could tell you what she said in that moment, but I can’t. While she was telling me her dream superpower, I was busy staring at my phone. By the time I looked up, she had left the room. Making resolutions is easy; keeping them is tough. Instead, try one of these three alternatives: 1. Set a weekly intention🗓 Making a weekly mini-commitment to yourself will keep you focused on your #goals , especially if you get an accountability partner with whom you share your weekly #intention —and how you did in keeping the previous week’s intended behavior or mindset. 2. Pick a word to guide you for the year✨ Every year, I select a word to guide me and focus my efforts. That word becomes my North Star for the year by which everything I do must adhere. This forces me to get #clarity on what I want and align my activities to support those goals. In other words, it ensures I marry my #attention with my intention. 3. Write a letter to your future self✍🏼 Try penning a letter to future you, describing how you want to feel, what you’ve accomplished in 2021, and what you hope to be celebrating this time next year. You can do this manually, or you can head to FutureMe.org , where you can create it digitally and select a delivery date to receive your letter via email. The beauty of writing your future self a letter is that you control the narrative. And this is one story that’s sure to have a happy ending. #leadership #career #progress #alignment #IlluminateMe #awareness …see more

My Sicilian grandfather was a house painter with a high school diploma—and one of the wisest men I’ve ever known. He understood that there was much to be learned by venturing outside the classroom. Travel, he said, was the best education. Here’s why: 1. It broadens your horizons. When you experience firsthand distant people and cultures, rather than the narrow view sometimes provided through your local media, your perspective changes. 2. It inspires your creativity. Research shows that when you travel, your creativity is enhanced, especially when you purposefully engage by immersing yourself in the local culture. 3. It helps you connect better with others. When you travel abroad, you gain a better understanding of people and their actions. And over time, you begin to realize that despite our differences, we have more in common than you would imagine. 4. It challenges you to grow. When you're in a land filled with foreign language and currency, exotic cuisine, and unexplored cities, you must move past your fear into the unfamiliar. Getting lost in a strange place means you'll discover people and things you may have otherwise missed—and later be grateful for the rich experience. #leadership #career #growth …see more

Job Seekers: This Post Is For You. Recently I wrote an article about job hopping and finding one’s own path when building a career. I was surprised by how many people responded about wanting (or needing) work. It’s clear to me that people need some sort of ‘public square’ to shout “I need a job!’” and, “I’m very qualified in A,B,C, so please contact me at...” It is for all of you job seekers that, during this Season of Outreach, Giving and Gratitude, I dedicate this post to you. So go ahead, if you are in the market for a job, invite people to connect and contact you. It’s hard to be in a position to ask for anything—whether it’s for a job, or a piece of bread or a warm shelter. So if you are in a position give advice or a lead (even if to listen), please do so now. After all, it is the time of year when we extend our heart and soul to strangers. …see more
