3D bioprinting has recently seen some setbacks, especially due to Organovo's announcement about changing the company's course. But this is something to provide hope again. A novel type of ink enables bioengineers to print bone-like material at room temperature with living cells. It's a big feat considering the fact that bone is a mixture of living and inorganic compounds in a highly structured mineral matrix. The team is trying to print larger samples and has begun small animal tests to see if a print can repair a large wound. In the US, the FDA has already signaled that 3D-printed bone technologies are eligible for FDA clearance. I’ve explored what 3D bioprinting can do today and what it promises for tomorrow in various parts of my e-books on The Medical Futurist. Another great step from the #DigitalHealth arm of the FDA . They just issued a guidance about regulating medical products that contain several functions. Some of those functions are subject to FDA’s regulatory oversight as medical devices, while others are not. I read the whole thing so you don't have to. When they regulate a medical device, the so-called "other functions" may jeopardize the cybersecurity, reliability or accuracy of the device. So they want to make sure that those other functions are also regulated, and the industry is aware of the dangers and risks so the FDA can have a better oversight over such devices too. As technologies get more advanced with artificial intelligence-based analysis, using smartphones or other connected devices, it was time to address this so patients and medical professionals can still use such technologies with trust. The best example they mention at the end is about a smartphone app that detects skin cancer from photos of suspicious lesions of moles. They describe that the quality of the photo a phone camera can make significantly shapes the outcome of the analysis. The manufacturer of the app should document how the camera impacts their app's accuracy. Excellent step forward! #FDAregulation #HealthcareRegulation …see more
Among the notable market moves this US morning: Bitcoins rose to a new record and are currently trading up over 6% on the day. This continued move up is driven by more signs of broader private sector adoption of the cryptocurrency as a potential medium of exchange -- more than offsetting added warnings from officials. #bitcoins #bitcoin #cryptocurrency #investing #investors …see more

This record pace of borrowing reflects an unusual strong alignment of both supply and demand issues ... that feed onto themselves in the SHORT-TERM but could well become quite problematic over the longer-term. These include, for illustration: Direct and indirect market subsidization by central banks; Investors stretching for returns, comforted by their strong comfort in central bank backstops; and Companies that, facing unprecedented revenue hits, are eager to avoid what they view predominantly as short-term liquidity problems becoming longer-term solvency ones. #markets #debt #economy #investing #investing #centralbanks #bonds #investors #interestrates #liquidity #fed #credit #bloomberg …see more

I GOT SHOT! Don Delucca, former police Chief of Miami Beach and former head of the International Association of Police Chiefs, shot me. I deserved it. In early 2016, Scot Cohen and I were trying to solve a problem. Everybody says BS about entrepreneurship that it's all about "hustle!" or "killing it!" or worse: "not everyone is meant to be an entrepreneur." This is all a myth. Entrepreneurship is about thoughtfully solving huge real world problems. Not about "hustling" or apps or other BS. Here's the problem we were discussing: why are so many mentally ill people and minorities getting shot and killed. Even when they are tased, they are often killed. 50,000 volts is a lot. Is there a safer solution? A non-lethal one? We brainstormed. Scot called an inventor he used to work with who had invented a sound gun. "Won't work," the guy said. But he had another idea. Almost four years later, 100s of police stations are testing out the launch of the result. Lives are being saved. The BolaWrap. It's a kevlar cable that shoots out at the speed of sound. Wraps the victim. Proud to have been a part of this. It's not been easy. The company recently went public as WRTC. And yesterday I was shot! --- Here: …see more
Several years ago, I thought I’d made it. I had made myself a lot of money so I bought the biggest apartment in NYC, I took helicopters to Atlantic City and would gamble for 48 hours straight while drunk. I never had this much money in my life before. I had everything I ever wanted...and then, I lost it all. People always ask me how I recovered from my loss and how I started over. This is exactly what I did. THIS IS MY STORY... You can find the free book I mention here: http://bit.ly/2vmS3f6 | https://lnkd.in/eaiNhUi …see more

Getting away from your usual routine and environment is the perfect opportunity to reflect on your work. Evaluate: and ask yourself: Are all the meetings you attend necessary? Are the reports you generate being read? Are there some tasks on your calendar that aren’t worth the time you’re putting into them? For some of these items, you might need to take a different approach. With others, you should eliminate them altogether. Getting away can be a great way of seeing what tasks are worth your time and what simply are not as important. Think about how you’re allocating your time and what you can do moving forward to be the most effective and productive that you can be. …see more

Thinking of starting your own non-profit organization? Ben Mangan came up with these 7 questions you should be able to answer before starting one. This very same list of questions can easily be used for business ventures as well. Thanks for letting me share this wonderful list, Ben! 1) What problem(s) are you aiming to solve, for whom, and in which places? 2) Why does this problem matter to society, and why has it not been solved effectively by markets, civil society or government? 3) What are the causes of this problem? Root causes? The systems involved? Indirect causes? 4) What has society learned about trying to solve this problem? What have we learned about what works and what does not? What research is available that describes these efforts? 5) How will your approach build upon these learnings? 6) What other organizations, governments and other entities currently work to solve this problem? Where are the gaps in their effectiveness? 7) Are you certain that the people you aim to help wouldn't be better off if you just gave them a pro rata share of the money you'll raise, so they have resources to solve their problems in their own ways? …see more

This past weekend, I hosted the first experimental "Coffee Round Table" at Berkeley, my spin on a coffee chat at scale and Reddit's Ask Me Anything. The round table was a small gather up for current students and recent grads to come and ask me anything career/personal branding/networking/professional related. Over 20 students, from first years to Berkeley-Haas MBAs, attended this last minute gathering to take control of their career. Impressed by their enthusiasm and initiative. Excited to host more of these in the future! …see more
