Finishing up Designing Your Life by Bill Burnett & Dave Evans . As the title suggests, the book breaks down the process behind building a well-designed life. Thought this quote perfectly defines the importance of the ups and downs in life (and professional career): "A well-designed life is a marvelous portfolio of experiences, of adventures, of failures that taught you important lessons, or hardships that made you stronger and helped you know yourself better, and of achievements and satisfactions." Each new screen in our lives has become smaller, more personal and we’ve sat closer to it. From Movie theaters (1905) to TV’s to Laptops and now Smartphones( 2006) , we now consume something specifically and only for us. Unlike movies or TV, what we watch isn’t based on us selecting, but pushed to us based on decisions we’ve made in the past. Everyone watched the same movie at a showing, but each and every social feed is unique. As we get closer to screens our eyes fix upon pixels and block out the real world. Feeds update in real-time, everything seems dominant and immediate. We stop observing, we lose perspective both on the world around us, and the notion of time, and history. As lockdowns again sweep the world, our chance to see the real world, to get perspective, to share feelings with others, to discuss to learn, not get “likes” to have chats “off the record”, to be wrong, is removed again. The world becomes ever more fervent, radical, divided, emotional, and this maybe offers some explanation. All our bridges, all of our context, we’re removed. …see more
I'm doing a new side project designed to get contributions, thinking, ideas, research and design work from the edges of Advertising. It's a thing called "Entity" My goal is to work with non standard / bright / opinionated bold / gifted people to create new presentations and material about the changing world, trends, and to generate ideas, sell in work, show new perspectives and explore the grey between our industries false binaries. A key part of it will be working with those who are not at the center of our world. We need to hear less from those with degrees, standard work experience, the same brains, the same privilege and of the same age. I want to smash ideas together thinking from Architects, Economists, Philosophers, renegades, Fashion students, early school leavers, MBA students, from countries we never hear from, from those who've been in other professions all their lives, and more. It's an experiment, it has no clear commercial goal, but all contributions will be paid and clearly accredited. If you would like to contribute, in a paid, part time, non urgent, project basis, in thinking, writing, design, production, marketing, then please use this form to apply. This is not an urgent thing. …see more
It's interesting to think what businesses are made possible by tech. GPS tech in phones made Uber possible, Online trust allowed Airbnb, Ultra narrow targeting of ads appear to have made a lot of new ideas take root, so what else can soon be done?
It's funny how in 2017, people still think "social media" is a term. All media is social. Where do the lines blur? Is YouTube social media? Is Netflix? If Facebook is, is Medium? is Whatsapp?
🧨 Attention is overrated. 🧨 Close first, convince later. 🧨 Business isn't won by the best. And other contrarian viewpoints... Check out this #b2b manifesto I put together for you. For #FlashbackFriday , ahead of #InternationalWomensDay on Sunday 8th March, I must share this inspiring message from one of my newest #ScienceSHEroes , one of the first black South African women to earn a PhD in #ComputerScience . I learn so much from women like Prof. Mmaki Jantjies (PhD) of the University of the Western Cape . I learn that as women our struggles and victories are universal. I was born during America's official apartheid era; Mmaki was born in the country that coined the term. I learn so much about grace and poise and focus when I watch accomplished young women like her achieve their professional goals. And I feel genuine hope for the future thanks to the contributions of leaders like Mmaki. The way she fights for access to technology for all children in #SouthAfrica makes me believe that for decades to come, Mmaki will be inspiring thousands of brilliant young minds. That's why this #AspenNewVoicesFellow is a #ScienceSHEroe . Do you know any others? Write a post about them for Women's Day! I don't know why I love this story so much.... Wait...yes I do. We have to stop thinking of children as too young to care if they'll live to see adulthood. The decisions we make about our planet will fall squarely on their shoulders---or completely crush them. Right on, Little British Dudes and Dudettes! Just when I thought that personal accounts of #femalegenitalmutilation couldn't possibly be more horrifying, I've just read about Ifrah Ahmed . My mind will never be able to grasp how a human being could think that savagely mutilating the genitals of a little girl could be a positive thing. There is no cultural lens to wear about this sickening brutality. This evil insanity is even practiced on babies. Once again, I'm inspired by the selfless courage of women like Ahmed who have survived this inhuman terror and want to save other girls from enduring it. I will look for the upcoming movie about her life, "A Girl From Mogadishu," later this year. But remember this...an estimated 200 MILLION women and girls have been subjected to this demonic practice. IT MUST STOP. When #AfricanAmerican women step out of the shadows, we don’t mess around! Here’s another #technology pioneer who is no longer a #HiddenFigure : 87-year-old mathematician Gladys West spent 42 years working with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division, and she was a member of the team that developed the Geographical Positioning System or G.P.S. Mrs. West was recently inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame. start small, build off of early wins, take the right amount of time, easy does it, progress to bigger things, accelerate the pace. with brilliant execution & sharp strategic thinking (and a bit of luck) you end up with a massive success. what do WeWork, Uber and any of those ailing unicorns - private or public - have in common? they went big from the start, aggressively big, with massive scale upfront. complex organisms are not meant to be rushed. there is an order and timing to sustainable growth. #innovation #startups #growth #scaling …see more

When it comes to handling setbacks, we are oftentimes our own worst critics. When we criticize ourselves we tend to feel shame. Shame oftentimes leads us down a vicious cycle of using and abusing distractions to get out of our heads. Instead of beating ourselves up, we must cultivate self-compassion.
