As a kid, I was always a weirdo. I would play soccer with the boys during lunchtime. I would hang out at the library. I would make friends with the librarians and ask questions. I had no fear. As a kid, there was very little to be scared of. I did it because it was fun. I did it as I thirst for knowledge. Life was great as a kid. When I went into high school and became more of an adult. New bad habits settled in: I tried to fit in the crowd and ended losing my voice. I would pretend to wear a mask, to be the same. I hated the attention when I had to do a presentation. The fearless kid was gone. I felt scared all the time. It took me many years of unlearning. Many more years to bring my curiosity to the forefront. Even more, to gain acceptance: It's okay to being a weirdo. It's okay to have a say. It's okay to have a strong opinion. It's okay to stand out. It's okay to have a voice. I love being a weirdo who loves fried chicken. But the one key learning I gained with wisdom is... Reframe the narrative. We control how we see the world. Want to make a shift? Switch to a new position? Venture into a new field? DO THE WORK. Listen - talk to someone. A real person who’s been doing what you seek to do for a few years. Understand what it takes to do their job - skills, experience, education, talent. This can validate (or nullify) your decision to pursue it in the first place. Learn - show interest. Listen to podcasts, connect to professional groups, read articles. Get acquainted with the jargon. Know to speak the right language. It takes time. DO - start your own project in that field. A blog. A podcast. Volunteer somewhere. Do something. This will give you plenty to talk about in interviews. This is a MUST. Write - post on LinkedIn or in professional groups/forums with your thoughts. Flying under the radar screen today, and understandably so given the amount of other news, the University of Michigan's US consumer sentiment measure came in at 71 for April. This compares to consensus expectations of 75. Lots of people have had a pretty transformative vacation at some point. The last Saturday evening, a balmy evening walk on a beach or around a harbor. A week away from the office and email as our master, our phone as handcuffs, blinkers off. Three days later and the memories have faded, the promises we made to ourselves seem like a distant memory, our hopes and perspective seem worn down by reality and an alarm clock. Even at the airport our pulses raced as we track down bags and experience the chill of normal/ But this time it’s different. Everyone will have been through the same feelings. Everyone . You won’t be alone in your new found perspective, you can be part of a cohort of people with the same aspirations, the same need for balance, to get things done, to focus on what matters, to be proud of what you can build and who want to rebel against politics, process, risk aversion and what grinds us all down.
