This excellent article by Chip Cutter from his interview with New York architect Vishaan Chakrabarti casts light on the drab uniformity of today’s modern urban landscapes. This is of particular relevance to Asia, where I live. So much of the beauty and distinctiveness of local architectural traditions, many dating back hundreds or thousands of years, have been literally bulldozed into oblivion, replaced by Western temples of consumerism. Like the hutongs and courtyard homes of Beijing, or the grey brick shikumen style archways and homes of Shanghai, or the red brick structures of old Taipei. These are all almost entirely gone, replaced by the dull, utilitarian and frankly downright depressing structures we find ourselves in today. …see more
My wish on International Women's Day is that soon (very soon) we will stop naming a day (or a month) after half the human race. Soon (very soon) we will see women only as complex human beings and stop labeling them through the lens of gender identity and physical characteristics. My wish is that soon (very soon) women will be: *Paid equally and fairly *Recognized for their achievements and rewarded appropriately *Given opportunities commensurate with their education and talents *Safe to be their best selves at work, at home and out in public *Afforded equal protection under the law no matter where they live May it be so. May we all work to make it so. Starting now. #pressforprogress …see more

Who your "audience" is—and what they need to hear—might surprise you. The funny thing about communication is that even after you acknowledge that someone is always listening, you never know who that someone listening might turn out to be. Or which of your messages will strike a chord with that person. It's easy for your communications to get lost in a sea of email. And you're constantly competing with a multitude of social media platforms and real-life conversations, so you never really know if something resonates. Until you do. Recently, and on several occasions, I was surprised to learn that my words had inspired someone and that I had had a significant impact on their life. While it pleased me immensely, these people were not who I would have thought were my audience, nor were the pieces they referenced what I necessarily considered my greatest work. But no matter. It served as an important reminder: Words matter. Never underestimate the immense power of your words to connect with others. Someone is always listening and probably needs to hear your message, even if you (and they) might not realize it at the time. #communication #connection #leadership #writing …see more
Sad but true: Most of us speak and treat others far better than we do ourselves. We all could use a little more self-compassion in our lives. One way to do that is to begin keeping a gratitude journal, writing down two-three "gifts"—your treasured latte, a kind driver who allowed you to merge during your commute without incident, unexpected praise from a client on a job well done—you receive a day. At those times when it seems the world is against you, grab your journal and peruse the pages for a quick mindset reset. Also, consider incorporating meditation into your morning or evening routine. This need not be complicated or lengthy; taking even just a few minutes to close your eyes and focus on a blessing in your life can be beneficial. Neurological research shows that being grateful floods the brain with dopamine, a neurotransmitter and feel-good drug that enables us not only to see and take pleasure in rewards but to take action to move toward them. When we begin appreciating the little things, we become more positive and tolerant. We move away from forming grudges and instead, become happier and more content. #gratitude #positivity #leadership #mindset …see more
