Turned out that all female panelists on the Asian Venture Capital Journal (AVCJ) Hong Kong forum are part of SheVC! I founded SheVC to create a community for women investors (there are so few of us), elevate their careers and make the industry more diverse-friendly. I love Sumo oranges. Yes, they’re weird looking. (I like to call them the “pugs” of fruit because their loose, undulating folds mirror those of the so-ugly-they’re-cute canines namesakes.) The value is what’s inside: deliciously sweet and fragrant orange flesh that delights the taste buds and invigorates the palate. But you’d never know that unless you got past the bumpy, lumpy exterior that hides the glorious fruit within. Imagine if the Sumo only thought of itself as an “ugly orange,” trying to fit in with the citrus perfection of navel oranges? Yet that’s what so many of us do, yearning for acceptance. We spend our whole lives trying to fit in, whether consciously or unconsciously. And it’s no wonder: we’re wired to belong. We want others to like us. Rather than risk rejection for being different, it’s safer to blend in and hide in plain sight. But in a #career sense, that’s a big mistake. When you try to be all things to all people, you end up being a non-compelling, watered-down version to everyone. Make it ‘Raine’ Within 43 minutes, Raine Scooters hit their kickstarter target of 73k. Their secret: building a community of motor scooter heads. It does help that Michelle Mannering , one of the cofounders of Raine Scooter is a community builder. Speaking about community, I bumped into Mich at the StartupGrind APAC conference where they showcased Raine. Going to conferences is a great way to support each other. Still, there’s a common misconception that when you build, they will come. A lot of work is required beforehand to create a successful product/hardware as a business. From our investing, it is true that women founders are more capital efficient and have better unit economics. Yet, we can invest at lower valuations because there's so little competition. Interestingly, Singapore placed #3 in the "where are female entrepreneurs facing the most gender bias" research. Here I am again cheerleading for an "Outsider" to come to Healthcare's aide! I've been a consistent advocate for new entrants with bold ideas driven by creative, optimistic leaders, to provide CPR! Like Apple and Amazon. My belief is that "The Healthcare Institutional Mindset" (including hospitals, nursing facilities and delivering systems) is one which is fundamentally risk-adverse, backwards-thinking and myopic. Within these organizations you will not find "skunk works" or "innovation labs" or "stealthy teams" working on new approaches to patient care. In healthcare we are designed (and hire) for being slow, cautious and repetitious ... even if doing the same thing over and over leads to the same mediocre and disappointing results. Again I say "Apple, come find me! I'm just up the road and am here to help improve care delivery for patients !"
