What a year 2019 was! I dedicated 900+ hours to learning chess so I might better understand the language of artificial intelligence: anticipation. I could work with an amazing team devoting their expertise to the mission of The Medical Futurist and The Medical Futurist Institute. I tested more than 30 digital health technologies and services. I met amazing people and gave over 50 keynotes and lectures around the world. My goal with 2020 is to prove to everyone that there is hope and we can make life better by making healthcare and health management better first. Digital health technologies will not have the same impact on every medical specialty. It will largely depend on whether the specialty is data vs interaction-based; and where it stands on the scale between being highly creative vs having a lot of repetitive elements in the job. Yesterday, I gave a keynote about artificial intelligence's role in healthcare to a biopharma company. One of the best questions I received was about liability. Who is to blame if an A.I. algorithm makes a mistake? This is a recurring issue and I like to answer it with a metaphor. If a physician listens to your heart sounds with a stethoscope and there was something wrong with the device and it misled the diagnosis, who is to blame? The manufacturer of the stethoscope? Never. The physician is supposed to be using all the available technologies at their disposal and with their expertise and knowledge therefore only they can be blamed, the final decision is their responsibility. The same applies to the use of A.I. It is a (regulated, supervised and assessed) tool in the physician's hand and thus only contributes to the decisions, not making them. Last November, I decided to start working with a chess trainer because chess is the perfect example for how humans use computers to excel at a task. My theory was that learning to play chess hours every day will help understand better the issues around how humans can work with computers in medicine and healthcare. I'm extremely lucky to have the chance to learn from IM Ármin Juhász who is not only the world's second youngest highest ranked FIDE trainer at the age of 20 with an ELO of around 2400 but also an exceptional teacher who teaches like someone who has been doing this for decades. Besides these, he has a wicked chess humor (so they say...). I dedicate the following weeks to raising issues about the role of artificial intelligence in medicine, healthcare and pharma. As I dive deeper and deeper into these topics, I'll keep on sharing all the experiences, details and questions that arise.
