It’s difficult to explain, impossible to measure. But once you start to develop it, you know: Emotional intelligence is a superpower. I’ve spent the last several years of my life studying the topic of emotional intelligence in everyday life, including the two years it took me to write EQ Applied. Along the way, I discovered a number of things that emotionally intelligent people see differently. 1. Failure 2. Criticism 3. Empathy 4. Thoughts 5. Silence 6. Feedback 7. Apologies 8. Forgiveness 9. Humility 10. Commitments 11. What does emotional intelligence look like in real life? Using a combination of fascinating research and captivating stories, I’ll show you--in my new book, EQ Applied. For example, you'll learn why emotional intelligence doesn't always look the way you imagine, beginning with one of the most famous business stories of all time--examined from a completely different angle. You'll discover how to control your emotional reactions, and see how one of the most uplifting events of the past decade--a modern day "miracle"--brought this ability to life. You'll see the power of emotional influence--illustrated by compelling stories about the FBI's former lead kidnap investigator, a famous singer's run in with an unruly fan, and more real-life examples. I'll be posting interesting updates about the book every day until launch, on May 28th! #EQ #QuestionOfTheDay What techniques help you exercise emotional intelligence? I have the tendency to speak too quickly. That's why I was drawn to comedian Craig Ferguson's sage advice: "There are three things you must always ask yourself before you say anything. Does this need to be said? Does this need to be said by me? Does this need to be said by me now?" Ferguson quips that it took him three marriages to learn this. Before you dismiss the idea, imagine how much hot air this would spare everyone. To be clear, these questions shouldn't discourage honest and direct communication. There will be times when the answer to all three questions is a resounding yes--even when what we need to say isn't comfortable for us or the recipient. When those times come, the three question method will help you speak with confidence--and learn to be assertive when it counts. …see more

Voice first interactions won't really take off in the mainstream until they get predictive. Proper predictive technology is here but requires exchange of way more personal data. Some interesting conversations ahead.
I just wrote this piece for the drum trying to make sense of the whirl and chaos of marketing and technology right now.

When Netflix launched streaming, it was only available on PCs. Then on Macs. Then game consoles (XBOX 360, PS3, Wii). Then came the opportunity to be available via Apple TV. However, despite a back and forth between Reed Hastings and Steve Jobs, Jobs stuck to guns - no color logos on AppleTV. It was too big of an opportunity to let get hung up by the desire to always use a full-color logo so I had the task of trying to figure out how to best represent it with those constraints. These were the ideas I came up with. If I remember correctly, we ended up negotiating with Apple to either the 2nd or 4th one on the right. But in looking at this again, if you take away the box on the 3rd one on the left, it bears an odd resemblance to the logo as it is today. #Apple #AppleTV #Netflix #logo #design #SteveJobs #NetflixHistory #netflixlogo #brand …see more
