I feel like experts in any field suffer from a severe lack of imagination. Especially about what's possible.

For #MondayMotivation -a street corner in #Harlem two weeks ago reminded me to keep moving forward, and never forget there’s a higher power at work. This statue of American politician and civil rights pioneer Adam Clayton Powell Jr. was the message I needed exactly when I needed it. “Press forward at all times, climbing toward that higher ground of the harmonious society that shapes the laws of man to the laws of God.” #inspiration #determination #optimism #hope #courage …see more
For #ThrowbackThursday , remembering this young woman I met at the #Fistula Hospital in Borama, #Somaliland back in July. She followed me around, trance-like, while I Interviewed other fistula patients with an interpreter. During a break, she walked up to me, smiled and gave me a big hug. It was a moment of pure joy. #womenshealth #reproductivehealth #globalhealth . #HealthForAll …see more
By sheer coincidence, I happened to have read an article about Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka , #Uganda's first wildlife veterinarian, a few months ago. So I felt a mix of astonishment and pleasure meeting her today at the National Geographic Explorers Festival today! The main focus of Dr. Gladys' work is the survival of the only 800 mountain gorillas left in the world. Four hundred of them are in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, and the rest are in other forests in #Uganda, #Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of Congo #DRC. Dr. Gladys discovered that with people living on the edge of the mountain gorilla’s forest habitat, these close relatives to humans were contracting diseases from livestock feces, bacteria found on scarecrow clothing in the fields, and other accessible points of human and livestock contact. Through postmortem investigations and community reconnaissance, she concluded that the declining health of the mountain gorillas was directly related to poor human conditions in the neighboring communities, poor human health was related to poverty, and poverty was linked to a lack of family planning. #NatGeoFest #wildlifeconservation #mountaingorillas #wildliferesearch …see more

“A large part of the economy just collapsed." That's how Ben Herzon described this morning's report on unemployment claims. He's right: 3.3 million Americans filed for jobless benefits last week, blowing away the previous record (695,000 in 1982). To put that number in context, we just wiped out the past year and a half of job gains in a single week. Here's the really scary part: Today's number actually understates the scale of the problem because the flood of applications swamped state unemployment systems, leaving many people unable to file. Next week's numbers could be even worse. The good news is that Congress is now moving quickly to help. The $2 trillion emergency package that the Senate passed last night would include extra assistance for the unemployed. The coronavirus is already affecting the economy -- disrupting supply chains, canceling events, grounding flights. But to cause a full-blown recession, the damage would need to spread -- which is exactly what the Fed stepped in today to try to prevent. It's too soon to know whether the Fed's actions will work (the markets aren't optimistic, at least so far), or whether the virus would have caused a recession in the first place. So in The New York Times today, I tried to answer a different question: What would a coronavirus recession look like? What could cause this situation to go from a limited (if severe) shock to a broader economic problem? And where would we see the first signs? One hint: Watch the barber shop. Give it a read, and let me know what signs you're watching in the comments. #coronavirus #recession #federalreserve …see more

"Heart-full." That's the word I used (and created!) to describe how I was feeling at the start of the #NoLongerVirtual conference in Atlanta. This was my third year attending, and once again, I'm blown away. This event isn't your typical conference. My friend and our fearless leader, Sarah Elkins , managed to do the near-impossible: curate a program of learning and sharing that engaged our minds and hearts, and created an environment that facilitated inclusiveness and deep connection. And after spending 2-1/2 days with the most amazing, inspiring, and encouraging people I can honestly say that my heart is full, and will long remain so. Here's to Sarah, and all my fellow NLVers—can't wait to see you again next year, and to welcome new members into our tribe! …see more

Leave a strong first impression on your first LinkedIn Stories I always like documenting. This is my first LinkedIn stories. It’s funny, before I was on LinkedIn, I was influenced by Snapchat. I’ve build a few channels on there and one won an award. Then I switched 💯 of my fried chicken energy to LinkedIn. The team invited me to be an early beta tester for LinkedIn videos. Of course I said yes. As a platform, it has open many doors of opportunities for me. Today marks another milestone. I’ve spend the day watching other people’s stories and very few are talking directly to the camera. Most are uploading old content. Which to me is a wasted opportunity. It’s an opportunity to reintroduce yourself. The fun part is seeing who watches my stories. I see ... Some old faces. Some new faces. And the benefit of stories, my interactions with my audience and volks. Stories may last 24 hours, but the conversations you have behind stories, lasts forever. Use it to grow your community. Use it grow your personal brand. Use it to show behind your mask. Use it to show your truth. #stringtheory on #LinkedInStories …see more
