From afar, infinity can look like a distant dream or even unapproachable. Infinity, like success, is how we define it. As a community, we can make infinity countable together. It always amazes me how much of the transformation in our lives have either come from Mobile Handsets or Mobile Operators. And we still haven't see much yet
It's interesting to see how people have adapted. We face three broad options, depending on the degree to which you've noticed new possibilities. 1) Embrace the new- Enjoy the new possibilities that come from removed constraints. Choose to embrace them, become excited about what they mean and change elements of your life around them. 2) Mitigate. Tried to minimize changes, and fit a slightly new life into the same shaped container of the past, with required adaptation. 3) Resist. if you've struggled to change, constantly notice the new constraints, ponder what you miss about the old world, and routinely dismiss what's possible. It's possible to feel limited by both the constraints of the past and of today, at the same time. e.g do you work from anywhere, and anytime, work from home and let work fade into evenings, or try to work from the office yet alone, from 9-6pm Personally, I shift between all three, but seems I have more choice than I often realize. …see more
"I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become” Jung An excellent quote, perfect for 2020 that I heard on the Do Lectures Podcast, a fast growing series of excellent chats hosted by Gav Thompson . I happen to be on one of them, talking about stuff I don't normally talk about, in a candid way, with Gav prodding me, but the others are far more interesting. BTW - I'm always open to doing Podcasts but choose ones that ask my hard but interesting questions, not ones about AdTech or Blockchain and that inside baseball nonsense and rarely promote them anywhere. …see more
Let's do a Q&A. If you have some questions you'd like to ask me, on topics you have strong ( informed) opinions on, please put them below and let's do a Q&A.
I keep flipping between caring too much & caring too little about general world insanity. It's a narrow space to aim for.
Public support for #LGBTQ rights is at an all-time high, this is how brands stay relevant. Let’s celebrate this visibility AND expect these brands to continue their support INTERNALLY (e.g. policies for LGBTQ employees) and IN THE PLACES THAT MATTER (E.g. #Tennessee ’s anti-LGBTQ laws). We not only CAN have both, we MUST expect it from for-profit firms seeking to leverage / profit from this movement, it’s history, and its community. …see more
Three takeaways from my live conversation with Fearless50 member Brooke Bartos today for Marketo, an Adobe Company : 1. Continue learning, seeking each other out in the #MKTGNation -- even when you are faced with "no's" 2. Bake Sales into the #MOPS process - they are your best source of campaign and content insights and your most important partner in the lead process. 3. Don't be creepy. (Enough said.) #personalization Thanks to Marketo + Adobe for the opportunity to chat with Marketo Champion, Brooke! One perk of being an #AdobeInsider is connecting with amazing marketers like her. https://lnkd.in/enPuvZw …see more
Russell Reynolds also reported on what it described as an “acute CMO succession crisis,” noting that more than 80 percent of publicly reported CMO appointments in the year’s first half were external hires. The firm cited the highly specialized nature of roles beneath the CMO, which often focus on single functions like CRM and data and analytics. As a result, companies are looking externally rather than promoting internal talent because “many of these mid-level marketing leaders lack a deep understanding of the full spectrum of marketing that is demanded of a CMO today,” the report says. …see more
Strategic Serendipity. 💫 It really IS all around us. I recently got an email from a reporter. (I've changed minor details to protect her privacy since I didn't explicitly ask for permission in sharing her message.) "Shama, I last interviewed you on the radio last year, it was a story about an eCommerce brand. I was going for a walk just now (listening to a webinar) and got to the point in the discussion where you mentioned to the interviewer about having written a piece about how banks were leaving millennials behind, and that piece was well circulated and ultimately led to a reporter calling you and interviewing you more than once. And I suddenly realized...hey, that was me - I was that reporter! Also, you are both so right about the serendipity part of social media. Much to my surprise, I landed a gig earlier this year thanks to a tweet. I had tweeted this guy's posts about podcasting a few times, tagging him, and he finally looked me up, listened to some of my stuff, and asked if I'd like to co-host a podcast with him." Here's to strategic serendipity. May you always find it, create it, and share it. Do you have a favorite strategic serendipity story? …see more

Often when you ask someone, what is your brand story? they'll give you seven factual bullet points. A signature story - a once upon a time narrative - is more effective. "People are not interested in your company, your brand, your product. They really aren't, sad as that may be, and even if you get through with the message they're skeptical." Stories "get attention. They get remembered. They change perceptions. They change attitudes. They precipitate behavior, and facts just don't." …see more
Porsche Taylor , editor-in-chief of #BlackGirlsRide magazine, rode her bike from Long Beach, California to DC for the 57th Anniversary of the #MarchonWashington . More than a hundred other Black women bikers from across the United States joined her along the way. Taylor also spoke during the event. “We are our ancestors wildest dreams, women of color traveling across the land of the free,” she exhorted to the swell of applause. “We are your mothers, your grandmothers, your aunts, your sisters, and your daughters. As I rode through Texas, I thought about our sister #SandraBland , and how a simple traffic stop ended in her death…when the call to march was issued, we knew it was time to mount up.” Learn more about the aftermath of the #MarchOnWashington2020 in my latest feature for National Geographic . https://lnkd.in/ds5Tvdn #CommitmentMarch #BlackLivesMatter #racism #racialjustice …see more
I’m still marinating in the astonishing, consciousness-raising experience of the #AspenIdeasHealth Festival. I never fully appreciated the true potency of an actual seat at “The Table” before last week. But when you get that opportunity, you must remember that you represent so many others, so much more than your own ambitions. Alicia Garza said it best; we need a different definition of what power looks like, and The Aspen Ideas Health Festival gave me hope that maybe some of those people who own the tables really ARE interested in sharing the space. As the International Conference on #FamilyPlanning (ICFP) gets underway in Kigali, #Rwanda , I'm remembering the time I organized a telephone link-up between #journalists in Nairobi and Dakar, Senegal, during the 2011 ICFP conference. By that point, #mentoring and training journalists had become more than my job. It was my mission, one I embraced with more passion and energy than any other facet of my career. It has also given me the most fulfillment of my life. And that's why I keep urging my LinkedIn family to keep moving forward, keep putting your best foot forward. Keep building your expertise, remain open to new opportunities. There is always something new and potentially rewarding waiting just around the corner, if you keep yourself ready. #journalism #training …see more
