I've really got no idea what to believe on the internet anymore. There seems to be such an enormous number of niche websites, some of which seem incredibly well written,, well designed, considered and robust, and some of which are wild propaganda, or edited by maniacs and it's very ( and increasingly) hard to know the difference. Generally, the more they claim to be "representing real voices" and "about fairness and giving a voice" and "believing in debate from all sides" - the more they seem to be right wing nut jobs. Which is troubling. The more they are about progress and what's "right", the more likely to be liberal lunatic fringes. I wish there could be a browser plugin that would change the font to shades of red or blue based on bias, and make the font bolder or thinner based on website popularity. I'm aware of sites like mediabias, but we need more. These are examples of what I mean, NO idea how "good" they are. www.unherd.com www.tabletmag.com www.thepostmillennial.com www.theintercept.com www.bustle.com www.areomagazine.com www.hedgehogreview.com www.theepochtimes.com www.washingtonexaminer.com www.alternet.org www.reason.com www.theconversation.com www.realclearscience.com www.fairobserver.com www.insidesources.com www.salon.com www.fee.org www.propublica.org …see more

Wanted to share a recent learning experience that affected me deeply. I recently had the chance to interview Chris Voss, who spent more than two decades in the FBI, during which he worked on more than 150 international hostage cases. I was fascinated at what Voss had to say--like the story in which he used his "late-night FM DJ voice" to talk three heavily armed fugitives out of a firefight with the police, instead persuading them to give up without a single shot fired. Want to know the number one lesson Voss taught me? Empathy does not equal agreement. Voss was forced to develop empathy for kidnappers and terrorists. He had to understand where they were coming from if he had any chance of persuading them to give up their victims.  To convince someone to think differently, you must first understand how the person thinks. Get to know their pain points so you can help solve them, along with their personal drivers and motivations. This will allow you to reach them emotionally--which may in turn motivate them to act. On the one hand, we are seeing that we live in a world eager (to put it mildly) to initiate change and move toward working from home on a permanent basis. On the other hand, we are experiencing the very real situation of not knowing whether this is something we want permanently, the reality of watching as “life as we know it” becomes “life as we knew it.” The disconnect between these two settings is stark. …see more

Glad to be back at the World Economic Forum’s annual gathering in China. McKinsey is a long time strategic partner to the Forum. This morning McKinsey global managing partner Kevin Sneader spoke on a televised panel about China’s economic outlook. Later, Jessica Tan , Ping An group co-CEO and McKinsey alumna spoke about “Leadership 4.0”. And it’s always good to bump into friends like James Crabtree , former Mumbai bureau chief for the Financial Times and author of the critically acclaimed and award winning book, Billionaire Raj. #worldeconomicforum #amnc19 #china …see more

Right now of the 6 largest "Auto" companies, only GM and Ford are really car companies. The top 3 ( and 5th largest) are more like battery companies, one of which happens to sell some cars. Personally, I find battery technology, electricity generation tech and LED technology some of the most profoundly exciting innovation around, but for some reason we get bogged down with things that seem more life changing like 3D printing, voice, robots etc. It's often the dull looking stuff, e.g graphene, API's, containerization, scalable architecture, which is going to change the world the most. * edit- it’s been kindly pointed out below this misses most Car companies ( like Toyota/Daimler/ VW/Honda ) so I’m not sure why the chart left those off. But the point is still quite valid I hope :) …see more

The current pessimistic thinking hits you in all directions these days. I pondered on buying an island like this for a deep working hideaway. Every friend or fellow Architect, is very quick to jump on the threat from sea level rises wiping it out or climate change meaning more hurricanes to blow it away. Nobody ever brings up things like the massive new developments in environmentally friendly pre-fab construction, the rapid developments in off-grid living e.g plummeting solar costs, better remote data connectivity, microfarming, improved waste water systems, or even given the airstrip possibilities in light self flying cars, or floating homes. The cone of likelihood does indeed contain climate change, but also incredible possibilities and removed constraints, I wish we could be open to the good and the bad. …see more

Remember that time Google made a robot to make phone calls for us. The best ever example of how not to innovate. When the technology first arrives we focus on using it to improve what we've done. We have eChecks, we make eMail, we use it to distribute the same TV shows, even Amazon is just a digitalized catalog shop. I'm still sure 99% of the world is still like this. It's using technology to make what we should have for the digital world where things get interesting. TikTok not Quibi, Lemonade insurance, Robinhood, Uber, Tesla, Klarna, etc. Thinking this way you can see how much opportunity there really is around us. …see more
