Good content is hard to make, Brilliant content is extremely hard. The beauty of recorded content is that you prepare, plan, craft and edit it. It takes ages The beauty of live content is that it’s scarce, you have a shared moment with others, and it can be interactive. There needs to be a way to consider the best of both. But live Radio and live TV takes hours of prep and incredible talent. Events use professional keynote speakers and hours of practice, and sessions run in other ways are rarely good . Something that has been made painfully aware in all this is that people of all backgrounds and vigor seem to subconsciously think "a good quality media outlet" is one that routinely supports long standing views they have. This makes the world seems less complex, more understandable, it makes us feel more normal than we dare normally feel. To see the World as untidy, irrational, or complex, to realize others' views make us strange, alone, and worst of all perhaps wrong???!! is a deeply horrible feeling. But it would be good if we could seek it out more. A little Netflix History as we head into 2021: Back when Blockbuster launched Total Access (their "by mail AND in-store" DVD rental offering), they used a code on the outside of their DVD mailers that reflected what number of subscriber you were. According to Mario Cibelli someone at Marathon Equity Partners noticed it and told Reed Hastings about it. At Netflix, Erich Ziegler and Paul Kirincich did some modeling which told us their growth rate and where they were headed in addition to their current subscriber count. When cross-referenced with other public data, including when Blockbuster debt covenants were going to come due, it allowed us to have insights as to when Blockbuster would have to do things like raising prices. It also allowed us to know when they would go bankrupt long before anyone else did.
