Apparently, Nike ’s slogan “Just Do It” extends only up until the point you get pregnant, and then you have to “just hide it” — or do it on your own dime. I don’t know why I was surprised to read Olympic athlete Alysia Montano’s account of rampant #genderbaseddiscrimination from the athletics corporation. You can read the details below, but her story has completely erased my naïveté about corporate campaigns designed specifically to give companies like Nike credibility around urgent social issues. Their bottom line ALWAYS ends at the bank, and there is no budget line for pregnancy and motherhood, apparently. Kudos to Montano for her courage in speaking out. Out of all my professional accomplishments, my greatest source of fulfillment comes from mentoring journalists. The fact that I've been able to do that on two continents to date is an immeasurable privilege. I woke up to another reminder of this when Kenyan journalist Sarah Ooko shared a link to her feature story on neglected tropical diseases that appears in Nation Media Group 's Business Daily Newspaper today. Sarah's expertise as a feature writer, an interviewer, and a seasoned health and science reporter are all on display in this fine analysis of the public health and economic toll that #NTDs exact on countries. Structural racism, abusive policing and discrimination have been front-and-center in the national discourse over the past few weeks. But many economists say their profession has had uncharacteristically little to say -- perhaps because of the field's own longstanding issues with discrimination and bias. Those issues burst into the fore this week with a controversy over Harald Uhlig, a senior University of Chicago economist who is the editor of one of the field's most important professional journals. His comments on Twitter comparing #BlackLivesMatter demonstrators to "flat earthers" for their embrace of the #defundthepolice movement led to calls for him to resign as editor. Black economists say this is about more than Uhlig. It's about what gets studied in economics, and how, and who gets to do the studying. And there are signs their longstanding complaints are finding an audience: The American Economics Association last week put out a letter acknowledging the profession's issues with racism. For more about the debate, and what it means for economics, see my story with Jim Tankersley in today's New York Times. #racism #diversity #economics …see more
The red-hot American job market? Turns out it might not be quite as red hot as we thought. The Bureau of Labor Statistics on Wednesday said U.S. employers added half a million fewer jobs in 2018 and early 2019 than initially reported. (The new numbers are preliminary, and are part of a regular annual revision process.) As I wrote in today's New York Times , the revision doesn't change the big picture: The labor market is in good shape. But 500,000 jobs is a lot of jobs! Certainly enough to deserve attention. And it's the latest evidence that the economy might not have been as strong last year as we thought -- which is significant, because the economy has slowed further since then. Plus, as LinkedIn Chief Economist Guy Berger, Ph.D. told me, big data revisions can be a sign that the economy is at a turning point -- a troubling thought given the other economic warning signs out there right now. (Still, Dr. Berger doesn't see evidence of a recession just yet.) For more, see my story in today's Times. #recession #economy #jobs …see more

(article may be paywalled) Stating the absolute obvious - the myth that working from home is less productive and effective than being in a common environment has been thoroughly shattered. Of course there are drawbacks, but we will never look at or approach the workplace in terms of location the same way ever again. Next up, education. For decades, byzantine and entrenched bureaucracy have blocked remote/online education for a broad curriculum, especially for K-12 education (higher education has made strides, but still lags where we should be). This will be the next domino to fall. …see more
