I've never thought about this, but this article does raise some very valid points. For instance, "a friend and HR exec told me that after a recent meeting about changes to increase flexibility for working parents during the pandemic, she was emailed by a child-free colleague with a simple question: “What about me?” My friend ended up having a lengthy conversation with this colleague about the challenges she was facing during the pandemic: an elderly mom who lives on the other side of the country, a brother who’d been laid off, her boyfriend being based in Sydney, and her own loneliness. This conversation startled my friend. “Truthfully, I hadn’t even worried about her,” she told me. “I just assumed everyone without kids was fine. I was wrong.” #KellyeMedia #gender #equality #diversity #bias https://lnkd.in/e5NHH4r …see more
Well, this is interesting. More than 93% of part-time workers said they would work longer hours if they had flexible work arrangements. #KellyeMedia #remotework #productivity
This post spoke to me SOOOOO much. When I look back over the arc of my career, I want to hug the young Rachel who thought one mistake was going to kill her, or that someone else’s opinion of her had the power of life or death. Or that I had to be perfect, or not even make the attempt. Today, almost 35 years after I stepped into the St. Petersburg Times newsroom (now the Tampa Bay Times - Times Publishing Co ), I marvel at the twists and turns my career has taken. I’ve mentored journalists in six African nations, traveled all over the world and just had an article published in National Geographic Magazine...at a time in my life when I worried that all of my career milestones were behind me. I want to shout from the rooftops, “The best is yet to come....IF YOU BELIEVE IT’S POSSIBLE!!” No matter what today looks like, tomorrow could be just the antidote. Don’t talk yourself out of your shot at success. Sending big thanks to Mindy Kaling and #EmmaThompson , because catching “Late Night Movie” on the flight from #Dubai to #DC inspired me to KILL during my duties as #emcee for The Aspen Institute #NewVoices Fellowship Program last night. I mean, I’ve always thought I was kind of funny, but I’ve never really given myself permission to show that side in formal settings. And since I'm slightly older than the character Thompson played in the movie, I could relate to that Golden Years angst about women and humor, about whether we can stay relevant with the young crowd. What can I say except...I. SLAY. ALL. DAY. Mostly because I was so awed and energized by the amazing stories of perseverance, strength and profound epiphanies that were shared by the Fellows. I was so inspired by their honest revelations, it freed me to go with my flow. There's nothing like watching really smart, really funny women take control of a room, like Thompson did in “Late Night.” That's what I was able to do last night. It felt marvelous! #womenemcees #WomenInFilm #standupforyourrights #LateNightMovie #CenterStage #openmic #humor #makeemlaugh …see more
This Ms. Magazine blogpost by Regina Davis Moss, PhD, MPH, MCHES , Associate Executive Director of #PublicHealth policy with the American Public Health Association , reminded me why I'm always astonished when some people question the need for a #BlackHistoryMonth . I am 57 years old, yet I never knew until about a few hours ago that the iconic DC Comics Superhero Wonder Woman had a black twin sister named Nubia! Reading Davis Moss's outline of her amazing back story, I recalled an exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution 's National Museum of African American History and Culture that highlights all the insidious ways African Americans have been depicted in advertising and popular culture, in order to perpetuate the belief that we are stupid, lazy and/or inherently criminal or hyper-sexual. When you control the narrative and the visuals, you maintain the upper hand,. That's what has occurred during 400 years of African presence in America. So when milestones like the movie "Hidden Figures" and "Black Panther"--and Wonder Woman's long lost sister Nubia--occur, it's not mere entertainment. It's restoring our rightful role in American and world history and popular culture. #BlackHistoryMonth2019 …see more

Examining the "ecology of eviction," and the impacts on communities, during a stimulating Q & A with Matthew Desmond of Princeton University . When it comes to taking care of others, where should we start? What's the very first step we should take? The answer is actually simpler than most people realize: care for yourself. The honest truth is that if you can't take care of yourself, you can't take care of others. And so how do we care for ourselves? First, you have to outline your values -- these are the attributes of the people we want to become. Health is a value. Education is a value. Friendship is a value. Once you identify your values, turn them into time. If we want to live our values out, we have to properly align them with our schedules. If health is important to you, set aside time to use that exercise bike you purchased in March. If education is one of your values, dedicate an hour to reading a few nights a week. If you want to maintain a close relationship with your friends, schedule a Zoom coffee. It's only when you take care of yourself that you're able to adequately address the needs of those around you. What's one of your values? And more importantly, is that value reflected on your calendar? …see more
