BREAKING: Email is the curse of the modern worker. ...alright, so it's not exactly breaking news that email can be a nightmare, but did you know there's actually research to prove it? A study published in the International Journal of Information Management found office workers took an average of 64 seconds after checking email to reorient themselves and get back to work. Not only is email a source of constant distraction, but studies find that about half the time we spend on email is an utter waste of time. But for most of us, our jobs depend on it. It's so ingrained into our daily work that giving it up could threaten our livelihood. So here's one step I take to manage my inbox: Whenever I reply to an email, I ask myself, “When’s the LATEST this person needs to see this reply?” Then, I use the “send later” function in my email to deliver the message at the right time. By clicking just one extra button before sending, the email is off my plate but is held back from being delivered to the recipient until the predetermined time I selected. Fewer emails sent per day results in fewer emails sent back per day. It also protects our nights and weekends from emails that can wait until later. Some people today have a negative view of technology. There’s this idea that big tech companies have too much influence on our lives and that their products have us all addicted. Whether we like it or not, habit-forming technology is already here, and it is being used to shape our lives. The convergence of access, data, and speed is making the world a more habit-forming place. The misconception is that tech has the power to control us instead of us having the power to control it. When harnessed correctly, technology can enhance lives through healthful behaviors that improve our relationships, our understanding of the world, and increase our well-being. The goal of my first book, Hooked, was to provide readers with a deeper understanding of how certain products can change what we do and, by extension, who we are. We can use tech to build healthier habits and live healthier lives. What are some ways technology has helped you lead a more productive life? #Hooked #Purpose #Tech #Design …see more

This woman just set a world record. 🏄♀️ Surfer Maya Gabeira set a new world record earlier this year. The 73.5-foot (!!!!) wave she surfed on February 11 in Nazaré, Portugal, was the largest wave surfed by ANYONE this year, earning Gabeira the WSL’s 2020 women’s XXL Biggest Wave Award. It also broke her own previous record, a 68-foot wave. By contrast, this year’s men’s XXL Biggest Wave Award winner, Kai Lenny, rode a 70-foot wave. Although today is the shortest day of the year, it is celebrated differently across the globe ❄ Here's how👇 Saturnalia: This celebration dedicated to Saturn, the god of agriculture and time. During this jolliest and most popular of festivals, social norms fell away as everyone indulged in gambling, drinking, feasting, and giving gifts! ❄ Dong Zhi (which means “Winter Arrives”): The Chinese celebration of the winter solstice, welcomes the return of longer days and the corresponding increase in positive energy in the year to come. ❄ Toji: In Japan, the winter solstice is less a festival than a traditional practice centered around starting the new year with health and good luck. ❄ St. Lucia's Day: This traditional festival of lights in Scandinavia honors one of the earliest Christian martyrs, incorporated with earlier Norse solstice traditions. ❄ Zuni - Shalako: Celebrated by Native American Pueblo peoples in western New Mexico, the winter solstice signifies the beginning of the year, and is marked with a ceremonial dance called Shalako. ❄ HOW WILL YOU CELEBRATE?! ❄❄❄ No matter how you choose to celebrate, cheers to happy beginnings! Here's how I consume social media. I often use the fried chicken analogy as a way to describe social media. A common question I get is: "Should I be on all channels?" If you're a small business, and if you're wearing multiple hats, and you're the ONLY ONE taking care of marketing. It's likely that you don't have a bandwidth to take care of 4 channels. The best thing is to hyperfocus on one channel where your volks-folks hang out (ie your target market). On this list, I should update LinkedIn I should say "Inventor of fried chicken emoji" or "fried chicken event organiser". Follow String Nguyen for more marketing tips. Yes, you can download and print this on to your wall. #stringtheory on #socialmedia #digitalmarketing #personalbranding #onlinemarketing …see more
I find writing very therapeutic. I had a lot going on recently. I got a chance to write my next blog post (which I will publish soon) in the train today by just concentrating on that versus wandering around my texts, social media, news, and emails. Now I feel a lot better this morning just because I did something that typically puts me in my zone (and remove unnecessary distractions from my head). Writing is like meditation for me. Is there any techniques you use to get yourself into the zone, calm down and be the best of yourself? Please share your thoughts below in the comments for others to benefit and learn different techniques. …see more

The world of fitness coaching apps and products are becoming brutally competitive. The large funding of Freeletics to expand to US market was surprising given the already fragmented and crowded market of coaching apps here. It seems the fitness coaching game becomes a CAC (customer acquisition cost) and retention game - the latter for sure has elements of good product baked into it. It’s interesting to watch what the future holds in that category. …see more
Don’t We All Want To Be a VIP? VIPs get the best of everything—whether it’s the best table at a restaurant, or best seats at a ball game. And when it comes to healthcare, VIPs get the best treatment, doctors, therapies and monitoring. ‘VIP-ness’ is a feature of American medicine. Major hospitals throughout the country have private spaces for celebrities, the super-rich and the influential. These VIPs get the most vigorous care and therapies . . . even when there isn’t enough medicine—or even hospital beds—for the rest of us ‘regular Americans.’ In my days caring for patients, every one of them wanted desperately to be treated as a VIP. Everyone wants the best medicine and best doctors, nurses and therapies. Everyone. Selected Excerpt: “We know that VIPs get extraordinary care — our health-care system already distinguishes between people deemed worthy of the highest level of care, versus those deemed unworthy. And that is the fact and the reality in our society.” …see more
Bullies are bad AND, they are bad for your Health. Harassment can cause anxiety, high blood pressure, sleepless nights, and job loss. What defines a person as a true bully? If that person regularly makes you feel "oppressed, humiliated, de-energized or belittled." Just like ice cream, bullying comes in different flavors but unlike ice cream, none of them tasty. There is verbal bullying and passive-aggressive and cyber bullying and of course, there is physical bullying. What to do? Here are a few strategies: Pitty them—assume they are screwed-up and try compassion. Pick your battles—strike back verbally or through formal complaints. Psych them out—act irrationally like respond with humor. Get a posse—band together with others to demonstrate strength in numbers. But mostly stay safe and if needed report it, or leave. Selected Excerpt: "Bad behavior is actually more contagious than good behavior," …see more
Discussing digital health and the future of healthcare with 4 different audiences gave me such a boost this week! Let’s see where I got to “travel” with the virtual speaker opportunity in just 1 day: Boehringer Ingelheim Slovakia, I was asked to share the main takeaways from 2020 as well as my predictions for the new year: the progression of digital health and the importance of planning and foresight. We all need to learn to live in the near future! Lauder Javne School, students were mostly interested in how to fight misinformation. I drew a comparison between eating and information consumption: just as I carefully select the type of food I eat, I also attentively pick out those sources I trust for any kind of information I consume. Massively Open Online Course with Edward Snowden: I talked about changes that will have an impact on children’s health and their rights to privacy. Critical Care: This is the 50th anniversary of the Society of Critical Care Medicine . I'm honored to get the chance to talk about the future of this wonderful profession. My goal today is to analyze how compassionate care can be combined with the technology of the future. We just recorded the keynote! #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #medicine #technology #speaker #keynote #speakerlife …see more
