Thank you Oprah Magazine for sharing my story - my struggles, my triumphs, and my heart for encouraging women to live limitless lives!! It’s not easy as a woman (or a man) to carve out your own path when the world is pressuring you to live up to impossible standards. It’s like, don’t have kids too young, but also don’t wait too long. Be sexy, but also make sure you cover up like Mother Teresa. Don’t rush into marriage, take your time to figure it out unlike so-and-so who has a terrible marriage, but also, when are you getting married? You’re enough, but also, buy all these beauty products to make you more desirable. I like girls who look “natural”, but also, every woman I chase after has fake breasts / hair/ nails and wears lots of makeup (oh I’m going in). Go to the gym and lose weight, but also learn how to bake this cake. Be yourself, but also be like everyone else. Anyone else feel me on this?! The world is confused y’all, and trying to live up to other people’s expectations will have you feeling crazy. If you can relate, I’m here to remind you, like God has been reminding me, that WHAT’S FOR YOU IS FOR YOU! Everyone’s journey is different, and that’s beautiful. Let go of who you’re “supposed to be”, and trade it in for who YOU were created to be. …see more

The only time I saw U. S. Representative John Lewis in person was shortly after I moved to Washington, DC in September 1994. He was walking down the street near one of the House Office Buildings, and I lived three blocks from the Capitol in a posh townhouse. In that moment, I had the most powerful sense of connection and gratitude to him. I had never expected to live in DC, or to work as a reporter for a national news service, or live in a fancy neighborhood. But I knew I was there because of the tireless work and extraordinary sacrifices made by people like him. I didn't cross over to meet him because the emotions were so strong, I was afraid I'd start crying. Now I wish I had thanked him. It hurts so much that he's gone, but after all that good trouble he caused, he's earned a rest. And maybe he's up there now, chopping it up with Dr. King and Rev. Vivian, figuring out a game plan to get us through these troubled waters. #RIPJohnLewis #GoodTrouble #RacialJustice …see more
On April 27, 1994, black South Africans stood in line for hours at polls across the country to cast their first Presidential votes ever for the impassioned lawyer and activist who sacrificed 27 years of his life in South African prisons to end the brutally racist system of #apartheid --the legendary Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. So how is life for people born after the end of apartheid, the so-called "Rainbow Nation"? I had the privilege of speaking to a few of them, including recent industrial engineering university graduate Sibonisile Tshabalala of #Johannesburg and media analyst Zakithi Buthelezi of #CapeTown , and to #photojournalist Ilvy Njiokiktjien ahead of the May 1 release of her photo book "Born Free: Mandela's Generation of Hope" for this National Geographic Magazine online story. Thanks so much to all the young people who responded to my request for interview subjects. And keep watch for an upcoming blogpost featuring the eloquent, insightful and inspirational opinions of Sibonisile, who typifies the ENORMOUSLY underutilized potential of young talent on the African continent. #postapartheid #RainbowNation #SouthAfrica #Madiba #Amandla #NelsonMandela #BornFree #MandelasGenerationOfHope https://lnkd.in/euSNRRw …see more
