Besides giving keynotes, I often do workshops where I make the audience do a forecasting exercise. I don't tell them but that's the part I enjoy the most. When you want do develop a technology or a product for patients and you know what they want, that's a question of service design. When you don't know what they want or what they will want in the future, you are basically doing forecasting. This is why it's so important to improve skills related to this exciting cognitive game. Here is a cautionary tale about science journalism. An interesting study came out about a neural network designed to predict the side effects of drug combinations. KurzweilAI used the term deep-learning while Futurity wrote that "A.I. predicts side effects for millions of drug combos". The study itself didn't mention neither A.I. nor deep learning. They only talk about the algorithm that is based on a neural network. When news writers try to simplify the message of a study, they often over-hype technologies creating false hope. https://lnkd.in/ehArnvK We also tend to fall into that cave too because it's really hard avoiding that. #deeplearning #writers #algorithms #neuralnetworks #futurism …see more

After Friday’s surprise beat on the jobs report, some are inclined to dismiss the information content of the weekly US jobless claims numbers, due out in an hour. That would be short-sighted in my opinion as the data still provide timely insights on an important part of the labor market. In a busy data week, US PMI measure for manufacturing edged higher in May but nothing dramatic, at least as yet. In terms of information content, the Germany measure (see earlier post) is more insightful given that Europe started lifting the economic lockdowns before the US. #economy #markets …see more
This week was similar to the last month or so: volatility around a largely unchanged level (charts for the Dow). As to why, the#markets' again lacked a positive driver: namely, no additional policy actions, global tensions rather than tailwinds, and fundamentals remain worrisome. #markets #economy #investing #volatility #stocks #equities …see more
Data Post Further to the earlier post, US retail sales fell 16.4% in April (16.2% ex autos and gasoline), month-on-month--the largest drop in a data series that started in 1992 (the last record having been set a month ago -- 8.7% fall). The April drops are larger than consensus expectations. More to follow. #economy #retailsales …see more
With 15 minutes to go to the start of trading in US markets, European stocks and US Futures have weakened throughout the morning and now point to a move down .. also potentially setting up an interesting technical dynamic between what remains of quarterly re-balancing flows and shorts looking for a retest of the lows. Oil prices are attempting a rebound on the last day on what is their worst quarter ever of performance.
