Had a giggle this week and thought I'd share an email I got: "Hi We are planning to run Display LinkedIn ads for one of our client in Canada. Can you guide us and help us about the banner sizes, text and other parameters. Our Client wants to start the campaign ASAP so kindly let me know the process soon." I replied with a full explanation and information, wondering if language barrier got in the way and he had some intention to work with our team somehow. I saw that Google just released a competitor to Airtable, which I've been hearing a lot about. I haven't used either solution before so I started checking it out and it looks like Google Sheets on steroids. Has anyone used either Airtable or Google Tables to accomplish cool things? You don鈥檛 need thousands of LinkedIn connections to create impact. If it was that easy then every person here on LinkedIn would have high engagement. I鈥檝e seen many accounts with 5000 connections with less than 5 likes on their posts. There are a number of factors that contribute to their lack of engagement: - Unclear branding - Mixed messaging - Lack of value proposition But the most common culprit is this... their content doesn鈥檛 resonate with their market. Which in turn weakens their brand and expertise. Marketing on LinkedIn isn鈥檛 magic. There鈥檚 a clear framework that allows you to build your brand and attract the right audience. Again, you don鈥檛 need thousands of connections to build impact or gain business. All you need is brand clarity and leverage the tools on LinkedIn to reel in the relevant engagement for your business. "Everyone is my market" I laugh because what you're saying is 7.5 billion humans is your market. Can you help 7.5 billion people? Do you have the bandwidth? The scale to look after them? It's super unrealistic. LinkedIn has 650 million professionals hanging here. That's almost 1/12th of our world's population. Even they don't focus on everyone. They focus on professionals. People who care about business. Appealing to everyone means that you're either in the early phase of your branding or business. The more you know whom you want to serve. The more you know their language. Their pains and challenges It's never about us. It's about how we can help your volks. Volks is my word for folks. It's part of my 7Vs, a framework for personal branding and influence. The more you know your volks. The more you can create content to serve them. The more you can help your volks. The more they will trust you. Know your volks. I'm simple. Are you racist? We typically go on the defensive mode and deny it. As humans, we aim to be good. We don't go out of our way to say "I hate (colour)". Still, our experience and our lives we sometimes pick up bad habits. Habits that contribute to our bias. Talks about race and any ism, is really complex. I used the question to make you think. How we react says a lot about how we receive information. How we process information.... And what surfaces to the top of our mind is brought up by our bias. When we hear certain words, it can be loaded with our assumptions. That's our bias. Acceptance is the first step. We all have these bias. The process of learning and unlearning is an on-going one. With what's going on in America. It's triggering a wider conversation about race and even, police brutality. Here are some more questions to think about: 1. Who holds power? 2. Who holds the least power? 3. Where do you sit? 4. What will you do next? Everything we do is a choice. A choice to consciously break our bias. A choice to question our thinking. A choice to Google "white fragility". A choice to make new friends (outside our usual sphere) A choice to learn how to be a better ally. A choice to break a shitty system. Don't we encourage leaders to surround themselves with people who will challenge their views, who will speak truth to power, who will raise issues and push back in the name of improving the work being done? Seems to me that that approach isn't being used in WH now. They are looking for "yes" people. Can't we all learn from others? And, consider what we teach our children: ask good questions, learn to listen and hear and be open to views of others. That's the hallmark of quality thinking and learning and education.
