For #FlashbackFriday : Me with some of the brave young reporters of the Voice of America "South Sudan in Focus" reporting team, May 2015. Bonifacio Taban , Hannington A. Ochan , Santino Manut and Waakhe Wudu were among a team of reporters who taught me what courage and commitment really mean. I flew in and out of Juba, #SouthSudan a half dozen times during my one year contract with VOA, but I mostly edited and managed schedules from a desk in Nairobi. During those tense moments when you wait for a check-in call from a journalist who's been detained by government officials, or when the generator has failed just moments before deadline, or when sickness or an accident threatens a reporter's life, you wonder where they get the grit work under such unstable, dangerous conditions. And then you remember:  they love their homeland. They have a passion for truth and justice, and they want everyone to live in peace and security. So even though the pay is scant or non-existent, even when they're demonized and scorned, young men like these epitomize the core of what makes journalism so vital to the concept of democracy. For those able to shape them in an effective way, habits can be very good for the bottom line. Habit-forming products change user behavior and create unprompted engagement. The aim is to influence customers to use products repeatedly and on their own without expensive ads or spammy annoying messages. Entrepreneurs should evaluate how user habits impact their particular business model and goals. While the viability of some products depends on habit-formation to thrive, that is not always the case. For example, companies selling infrequently used products or services do not require habitual users. Life insurance companies leverage salespeople, advertising, and word-of-mouth referrals and recommendations to prompt consumers to buy policies. In their case, once the policy is bought, there is nothing more that the customer needs to do.
