What does it mean to show up for and with your customers. Came in from my morning walk and jumped on a call before showering.. I left my hat on. My partner 10 mins in starts making fun of me but of course she doesn't have her video on... My client goes and grabs a hat to be part of "the club". TL;DR: Bravo, Microsoft. Well done!! Nine years ago, I remember having a conversation with a (now-departed) Microsoft executive about the future of Windows Phone. My take was that we would be better off monetizing Office for Mac and Android by making it available on the hundreds of millions of devices already being sold. I distinctly remember saying: "We already own the office productivity market for Desktop, this is the easiest way to win in Mobile - right now. We can fight the hardware battle another day." Emphatically, I was told that I was wrong, without any data to back up that assertion, other than, and I quote: "We will kill the iPhone." Years later, $40+ billion wasted on Nokia, many lessons learned, we now have this: "But Microsoft has assured CNET that it's sticking with Android and has no plans to make a Windows-based phone. The company's Chief Product Officer Panos Panay was so emphatic about that fact, he told Wired so -- twice" What a tremendous cultural change by Microsoft. Where Steve Ballmer and many of his former leaders fanatically pushed a dying idea to the brink of despair, Satya Nadella smartly monetized Office, embraced the world's biggest phone OS, and quietly beat everyone to innovation. This is how you win. …see more
On "Management" vs. "Leadership": If top down management is not dead, it's certainly terminal. Workplace culture has radically changed. What was acceptable yesterday is rightfully rejected today. People have mobilized in unison to state loud and clear that they will not tolerate being told what to do, berated, talked to inappropriately, being retaliated against, or worse. Which is why I continue to be dumbfounded to see even the most "modern" companies allow out of touch executives to "manage" the way they managed decades ago, and continue to perpetuate power dynamics and behaviors that now drive their best people out in droves. The success or failure of the companies of tomorrow no longer depends on the coolest tech, the most money, or the best networked board of directors. It depends on truly understanding how to *connect* to the new generation of people entering the workforce; on leading them to a unified vision *and* enabling them to make decisions on how to get there. So let go of your egos, dress codes, titles and protocol. Things that were once symbols of influence are now just off-putting. Instead, tell your folks "I'm here to help us" and "I work for all of you". Listen, learn, lead them, and let them lead you in return. #culture #leadership #management …see more
How do you handle internal triggers? Internal triggers are the cues from within that prompt us to action. When we feel our belly growl, we look for a snack. When we’re cold, we find a coat to warm up. How we deal with uncomfortable internal triggers determines whether we pursue healthful acts of traction or self-defeating distraction. By understanding the circumstances around uncomfortable internal triggers, we can disarm them. This is why in my book, I included a Distraction Tracker as a way to note the triggers you experience throughout the day! It records: • When you experienced a trigger • Your feelings at the time • Which type of trigger prompted you And it leaves space for you to brainstorm ways to manage similar situations in the future The better we are at noticing our behaviors, the better we become at managing them. I’ve included a link to this exact form in the comments section! How do you manage internal triggers? #Indistractable #Triggers #Behavior #Tracking …see more
Is the world getting us more distracted? It often feels like it. After all, we can’t go a day without the news showing the ill effects of digital media on our productivity and emotional well-being. I believe it’s time we start talking about the root cause of our distractions. I simply can’t wait until the launch of Indistractable in September, so I want to share one of my favorite discussion starters inspired by the book’s lessons. Here’s a sample question: The internet (including social media) can be a content vortex. What habits would you like to cultivate to improve your current relationship with content consumption online? I’d love to know your thoughts on this. 'I am terrible at sales' That limiting belief held me back. 'I am scared of the camera' This another limiting belief that held me back. Often we are our own worse enemies. We do things that sabotage our successes. When we say "we are not capable of something". What we do is reinforce that limiting belief. Our voice (internal and external) is a powerful tool. It can overcome challenges. It can attract attention and vibe with the right folks. By the way, I overcame my fear of the camera in 2015 and I've created hundreds of videos. Video is a powerful tool to convey your expertise and superpowers. I had to hone my skills and it allowed me to gain LinkedIn's Top Voice - 4 times! Sales - I generated in 40k in November (my best ever). I found mentors like Justin Michael and Nick La - they gave me the tools, the resources to believe in myself. It's interesting - we acknowledge our weaknesses and find ways to upskill. Weakness can convert to strengths. Make 2021; the year of you. Find ways to upskill and develop your career to the next level. Whether it be a digital storyteller or epic seller. Don't let that limiting belief stop you from being the best version of you. #stringtheory on #personalbranding #sales #b2b #leadership #motivation …see more
Linkedin Groups is dead 💀 - true / not true? I’m curious to see what your experience has been growing communities here? This morning, I asked about Daniel Roth about how to grow an audience on LinkedIn. He and Maya from the LinkedIn News Editorial Team gave great actionable tips. See my notes 📝 to know more. The key theme that I gain from being apart of the Clubhouse room is “conversations” 🍗 How are you creating content that cultivates conversations in your comment thread? Commenting is a skill worth cultivating and it’s super underrated piece of content. The queen of commenting is Lila Smith. She makes it hyper relevant and it’s a 2-way convo. One thing for sure is that growing an audience requires patience and long term thinking. Many of us give up too easily. But... the opportunity is now, it’s to start building now. Don’t wait, create! Being on Clubhouse, there’s a real FOMO. The fact we were able to be in the same room to ask direct questions is amazing - first hand knowledge is valuable. #stringtheory on #clubhouse #personalbranding …see more
Video tip: The power of FULL STOP. The moment of pause helps the audience digest the information that you sent them. In videos, do you use the FULL STOP to pause? We tend to talk rapidly and we don't give our audience space to digest information. I learn t this tip from my voice coach. Yes, I actively try to improve my craft regularly. My voice is a tool and increasing it by 1% gives me that extra edge. So, the pause of a FULL STOP. Example: "I saw a man kill with bare hands. (pause)" Audience: the pause will help them visualise and react. Give it a go. Leverage the full stop. #stringtheory on #video #personalbranding …see more
LinkedIn = Facebook Maybe LinkedIn is the new Tinder? I've seen some dodgy messages. Lately, I feel the new interface is sending out strong Facebook vibes. Maybe I just hate change. I shared a post about fried chicken (which is on point branding for me) and someone accused me of contributing to the Facebook vibes. But what does that mean? LinkedIn as a content platform is evolving to share: - personal development - career advice - marketing and sales tool - networking We will see all types of content here with a variety of voices. I actually want more compelling voices that will make my feed on LinkedIn more interesting Thoughts? Truthfully, it'd be nice if there are more fried chicken lovers on LinkedIn. There are less than 300 people following #friedchicken (I'm calling BS here). #stringtheory on #digitalmarketing #personalbranding …see more
