Add to the record drop in US retail sales a record fall in industrial production. April's 13.7% decline (MoM) in factory output is the largest in a data series dating back to 1919. Together, these two economic reading highlight April's SIMULTANEOUS destruction of supply and demand. #economy …see more

In the new Covid-19 world, we're all dealing with intense emotions and huge levels of anxiety. These emotions aren't bad; they can actually help us if we know how to handle them. But if we let them get out of control, they can paralyze us or send us into a downward spiral. Emotional intelligence isn't about trying to remove emotions from the decision-making process; rather, it's about understanding and managing those emotions. That's especially helpful during a time of crisis because it can help us to think rationally and balance our emotions with rational thought, so we don't act in a way that we later regret. I like to call this, "making emotions work for you instead of against you." Want to read some specific examples, and see how you can deal with them? Rules. Most employees hate them. And I'm betting right now you could name a bunch of stupid rules you've encountered in the workplace. But companies need rules to ensure quality and performance, right? Not according to Netflix. Netflix avoids rules like the plague. In his new book, Great Leaders Have No Rules, bestselling author Kevin Kruse cites Netflix for its remarkable success over the past two decades. Back in 2009, Netflix released its now famous culture deck, which has now been viewed millions of times. In it, company leaders acknowledged the traditional logic for rules and the short-term benefits they bring. "But the deck goes on to teach that over time, a process-focused culture drives out the high-performing employees that companies aim to keep," writes Kruse. In contrast, Netflix asserts that a business should focus specifically on two things. The truth is, none of us can control our emotions perfectly. We all make mistakes, and we’ll continue to do so. Show me an “expert” in emotional intelligence, and I’ll show you another person who loses their temper or makes an emotionally faulty decision—under the wrong circumstances. But by studying your own behavior, identifying your triggers, and practicing the right technique, you can gradually “reprogram” your brain’s instinctive reactions—and cultivate the habits you need to successfully keep your emotions in balance. Moral of the story: Don't be a know-it-all. Be a learn-it-all. Read more in my new book, "EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence": https://amzn.to/2sxFLho …see more

Stop making flawed assumptions when you delegate a task. Ask yourself, “Where am I making assumptions about the skills and knowledge of the person to whom I am delegating this task or project? Have I assumed that they are clear on the goals of the project? Have I assumed that they understand the terms I am using, that they have the skills and knowledge needed or the time, tools, and other resources required?” Check your assumptions. When they do not match reality, take steps to fill the gaps by providing the missing knowledge, skills, tools, and resources. Loved this tip? There's 98 more!
