Students in Darwin in Australia’s Top End will gain valuable real-world skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), thanks to the Pathways in Technology (P-TECH) Australia program. Exciting that Casuarina Senior College in Darwin is the first P-TECH in the Northern Territory. P-TECH is an innovative model of collaboration between education and industry and will provide an industry supported pathway for young people in the NT and build the skills they need for the jobs of the 21st century. Maritime and defence industries are growing quickly in the NT so the Australian Industry and Defence Network will be a key partner on this P-TECH. I was pleased to join the conversation at the inagural planning meeting with energized employers and educators at Casuarina Senior College last week. The first P-TECH school was established in the US by IBM in 2011 in collaboration with the New York City Department of Education, The City University of New York, and the New York City College of Technology. IBM is the industry partner for the Ballarat Federation College Partnership. #STEM Jade Moffat Herman Amy-Lou Cowdroy-Ling Janine McPhee Nathan Ellery Rashid Ferrod Davis Sharna Peters Louise Davis …see more
Get this. I am here at UBC as visiting prof for five weeks. They deliver breakfast at St Johns College on weekends when dining hall is closed. Comes w/ a fortune cookie. Yes. For real. Here's mine: "Le moment es bien venu d'explorer." How apt!!!! Yes, I will spend a good part of the day today exploring campus to find my way around. And, I see first hand how hard it is for new students, decades younger than I am, to transition to a new institution. Will write on that soon; it is an experience that reminded me of Racing Odysseus, one of the best books written by a former college President as he returned to college as a student -- ironically, the US St. Johns College. Consider this a broader message for all of you trying something new, going to some new place and trying some new employment strategy. See Fortune Cookie on top in photo. …see more

Help me understand. Ivanka Trump is flying coach on Jet Blue w/ her kids. She's apparently "accosted" by another traveler w/ his own child; he makes negative Trump comments. He's kicked off flight w/ his son. Isn't that odd? Consider this approach that might have led to diff. outcome. What if Ivanka said: I am sorry you're so upset by my father's election. Now's not the time to discuss that. But, I wish you a happy holiday. And, can I give your son some crayons for the flight? When other go low, go high.Grace, calm, cool and thoughtful. …see more

As COVID-19 cases surge again, uncertainties become paramount, and pressure continues to build, we all feel tremendous amount of mental, physical & emotional burden. One could argue that mental health is perhaps the biggest health crisis of our generation & not per se #coronavirus . Either way, at this point it's critical we all take steps in our daily routines to help ourselves stay sane and centered! What do you do to help relief some of your stress? Below I shared a few things I do to stay sane during this unprecedented times: ✅ 30-60 minute daily walk in the nature. ✅ keep shifting my mindset from the negatives to the positives and reminding myself to count the blessings despite all the challenges. ✅ 30 minutes of fun activities with my family in the evenings (e.g. scooter ride, art works) ✅ stay connected to my friends, colleagues, and network. showing kindness and care for others makes you fill good. ✅ try my best to do 3-5 minutes of deep breathing a few times a week. I've started teaching breathing to my kids and use Calm kids content, which has been fun! Please share practices you use to stay mentally healthy in the comments. #sharingiscaring #mentalhealth #gratitude #sanity #shelterinplace #emotionalwellbeing #depression #anxiety #stress #stressmanagement …see more
It's heartbreaking to read/see the innovative and disruptive businesses such as Rent the Runway and many other amazing companies have been so severely impacted by the coronavirus aftermath! I have not been a user of Rent the Runway, but I always have had a tremendous amount of respect for its founders and thought so highly of the innovative company, creative business model and unique brand they've built that was LOVED by so many women and users. My heart is with the founder and executives of Rent the Runway as well as its employees and those who got impacted by the furlough. I also feel for the founders and teams of many other amazing companies that their businesses halted due to this pandemic. It's super tough! Yup-it’s True Whether We Like It Or Not: Money in Healthcare Lead to Profits Over Patients Sorry to sound like I’m a “one trick pony,” but I’m not the one making the news. Studies by scientists at the University of North Carolina, Yale University, the George Washington University and Harvard Medical School, among others, show that when doctors are paid by pharmaceutical companies, they're more likely to prescribe drugs made by those companies. Of course many-if not most-clinicians are ethical and professional which means they have to work even harder to avoid being sucked into poor decision making due to perverse incentives from pharmaceutical companies and productivity/earning requirements within their own medical group....but it’s a struggle. Selected Excerpt: “A CNN analysis of federal data, shows that from August 2013 through December 2017, Bayer paid 11,850 doctors $2.5 million related to Essure for consulting fees and similar services. These payments are legal but very controversial.” …see more
GIGXR , an extended reality healthcare company, just launched new applications to enable remote access of live, holographic standardized patients for simulation training. Holographic patients can be transported by instructors using a mixed reality headset to students anywhere. The new apps brings life-like patient holograms into students’ mobile devices. Students can walk around, hear and interact with the patient, while also engaging with the instructor and students, to assess vital signs, patient decline and discuss data. I could have used something like this in medical school. https://www.gigxr.com / #healthcare #digitalhealth #meded …see more

My new keynote narrative entirely dedicated to A.I. is ready and I will bring it to a few places in the coming weeks. The major point I try to make by using an emotional narrative is to urge people in healthcare to learn about the basics of A.I., its role in the future and how to prepare for all these. The whole keynote is designed around these issues. The first question everyone has after hearing such a clear description about A.I.'s role in healthcare is how to start. What is the first practical step you make to prepare for the age of A.I.? https://lnkd.in/g_F34DG #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #fromchancetochoice #speaker #keynote #speakerlife …see more

The management of respiratory diseases could involve a lot of good digital health technologies. AioCare is a device to monitor and treat pulmonary diseases, consisting of a portable spirometer connected to a smartphone app and a dedicated doctor’s panel for remote tracking of your results and secure communication. The conversation around telemedicine should be around those medical issues that arise because of the technology and not whether the technology itself is viable. Here is an example.
Spire Health was kind enough to send me a set of Spire Health tags that will let me track sleep, stress, and physical activity. The tags are attached to clothing, never need charging and go through the washer/dryer too. I look forward to testing it and I'm very glad they provide complete access to both processed and RAW data. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #wearable #health #healthy #fromchancetochoice …see more
Great studies came out in 2018 showing how certain algorithms (deep learning and machine learning) can assist physicians in diagnosing better. Although, we must note that all those algorithms were trained on training data sets in silico while life is much more diverse than that.
