Here's Politico on the unprecedented demands on US Food Banks. This phenomenon plays out every day locally with one of our Food Banks here continuing to report very long lines of people waiting--many of whom had what seemed to be very secure jobs pre COVID-19 shock but little savings. Now imagine this situation multiplied by a large number -- that's the risk still facing several developing countries ... and it's one that requires enormous domestic relief efforts supported by the international community. https://lnkd.in/gjhGMvD #covid19 #foodbanks #insecurity #foodsecurity #politico …see more

H/T Michael Mackenzie: The Financial Times chart re continued out-performance of US stock markets. As I have argued for the last few years, and notwithstanding big/growing performance dispersion, expect this out-performance to persist in most (up/down) markets other than a sustained global expansion. #markets #equities #stocks #stockmarket #investing #investmentmanagement …see more

AJ Jacobs traveled all around the world to say “thanks” to all the people involved in making his morning cup of coffee. Then he wrote about it in his new book “Thanks a Thousand.” He thanked everyone from the farmers to the truckers and so on. Then I did my own gratitude experiment (during this podcast). I called the professor who signed the letter that got me thrown out of graduate school. And I said “thanks…” …see more

How can you benefit from negative feedback? It's important to remember that anything you see as a threat is going to spring your emotions into action, bypassing normal decision-making. You might: -tense up and stop listening -try to justify or rationalize what you’ve done -minimize the problem or shift the blame But these actions don’t benefit anyone. So how do you keep your emotions from getting in the way? The key is to train yourself to view criticism not as a personal attack, but instead as a learning opportunity. Whenever you receive negative feedback, focus on answering two questions: • Putting my personal feelings aside, what can I learn from this alternate perspective? • How can I use this feedback to help me improve? Now, you shift your time and energy to a productive exercise. In effect, you turn what could be a negative situation into a positive experience--a chance to learn and better yourself.
