Everyone wants to be appreciated. But what if you're not in the habit of doling out praise or commendation? How can you show appreciation for others, while still keeping it real? You must follow two rules: 1. Be sincere. Attempts to flatter or compliment superficially will backfire in the long run. You also shouldn’t view commendation as a task to be checked off your list. Rather, sincere praise comes from consistently looking for the good in others--then, pointing those things out. If you feel uncomfortable doing it in person, try writing a short note to start. 2. Be specific. There’s value in expressing general appreciation, but the more specific you are, the better. Don't just tell them they're great, tell them *what* they do great--and why you appreciate it. The truth is everyone deserves commendation for something. By learning to identify, recognize, and praise the gifts of others, you bring out the best in them. Read more about how to make emotions work for you instead of against you in my new book: "EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence." https://amzn.to/2sxFLho #EmotionalIntelligence #leadership #management #PersonalDevelopment #BestAdvice #BusinessIntelligence #careers #culture #EQApplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

What is empathy? We can actually split the quality into three categories: cognitive, emotional, and compassionate. To illustrate, imagine that a friend has recently lost a close family member. It begins with cognitive empathy: an attempt to imagine what the person is going through. Who did they lose? Besides feelings of pain and loss, how will their life now change? Emotional empathy helps you go further, to actually share your friend's feelings. You try to connect with the feeling of deep sorrow and emotional pain. Compassionate empathy moves you to take action. You might: -provide a meal, so your friend doesn’t need to worry about cooking -offer to help make necessary phone calls or do some chores -come over to help keep them company; or, if they need to be alone, pick up the children and watch them for a while This is just one example, but every day will bring new opportunities to develop empathy. In fact, every interaction you share with another person is a chance to see things from a different perspective, to share their feelings, and to help. Mentorship and executive sponsorship is key to fixing the talent pipeline to get more women, LGTBQIA+, and underrepresented minority groups to the c-suite. Thanks Antonia Cundy and Financial Times for giving me the chance to share the work Close the Gap is doing to bridge the potential gap for youths from underrepresented and low-income backgrounds! -- Tai Tran, president and co-founder of Close the Gap, a foundation in the US to help students from low-income backgrounds fulfill their potential by providing mentorship and financial support, says the problem is tied to attracting the next generation of talent. “The pipeline starts early on,” he says. “It’s a kind of chicken-and-egg problem: if I want to have a more diverse team, I’ve got to have more diverse people in leadership.” He adds: “When you go on to a company’s website and look at the leadership team, you start wondering, do I see myself being part of that leadership team? So you need to see people that look like you.” …see more

So proud of Alexander and everything he has achieved. We started Close the Gap Foundation to empower students like Alex to close the network and STEM gap through mentorship. Check out Alex's #plusonepledge story of resilience and how Close the Gap helped caught him from falling through the cracks that many low-income and first-generation students face every day. I wouldn't be where I am today without givers, gap closers, and mentors who gave me a chance when I first started my career in tech and marketing. On September 10th, Alibaba Group celebrated the 20th anniversary of the founding of the company by Jack Ma and a group of young entrepreneurs who, in building the Alibaba, pioneered China’s ecommerce industry. The other milestone they marked this week is the transferring of the Chairman title from Jack to Daniel Zhang, a leadership transition announced by the company a year ago. Jack will be focusing more attention on his rural education and philanthropic initiatives. In this exclusive interview with Alibaba Group Chairman and CEO Daniel Zhang, he talks to my colleague Daniel Zipser about Alibaba’s approach to innovation, how he decided to launch such innovations as their annual “Double 11” shopping event and Freshippo / Hema supermarket, and how he balances analytics and instinct to guide his own decision making and spot hidden opportunities. #AlibabaGroup #Alibaba #ecommerce #innovation #technology #China https://lnkd.in/fvT7Mnm …see more

Great advice... 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐝𝐨 — 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐭 𝐢𝐬. "Don’t focus on trying to find your “passion” before starting your business. Your passion will become whatever you dedicate your life to, regardless of how glamorous your business or product is. Start by setting out to be the best in the world at whatever job you have, because that level of pride will carry over into everything you do. I never would have thought to set out to be the best in the world at ID badge holders — I wanted to be a pro soccer player. However, I am now one of the two most passionate people in the world about being the best at badge holders (the other being my brother/business partner). If I had waited to “find my passion” before I started, I would have missed the train 20 years ago." — Patrick Barnhill, Specialist ID, Inc. More here: …see more
