Choose which social media platforms to engage with carefully. You don't have to choose them all. In fact, unless you're a full fledged media company I wouldn't advise that. Why? If you don't have the resources and bandwidth to feed them correctly - daily, thoughtfully, interacting with your followers - don't get on them. Nothing looks worse than social media feeds that appear to be starving. Hire someone if you need to, but don't let your social media streams languish. It just makes you look bad. #KellyeMedia …see more
I voted this morning in the name of #communityorganizer , #votingrights activist and #Mississippi #CivilRights Legend #FannieLouHamer , because I am sick and tired of watching my country descend deeper into the morass of viciousness, tribalism and selfishness that Ms. Hamer fought so hard to pull her people out of. I’m sick and tired of complicity and cruelty and callous disregard. I’m just plain old sick and tired of being sick and tired of aching for my country’s future. So #IVoted , because as Ms. Hamer put it, “You can pray until you faint, but unless you get up and try to do something, God is not going to put it in your lap.” #Election2020 #VotingMatters #VoteForYourLife …see more
Eleven years ago, my very first project as a #healthreporting mentor/advisor for the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in #Kenya was published. I'd asked eight reporters to visit health facilities around the country and write about conditions there. The resulting project was one of the first times a health issue had been featured so prominently on the front page of Nation Media Group 's #DailyNation newspaper. Five years later, one of the journalists I mentored, Joy Wanja Muraya , produced a front page Daily Nation feature about a potential threat to Kenya posed by a #polio outbreak in #Somalia . I noted, with some pride, that my work with Kenyan journalists was making an impact in newsrooms. Today, journalist Annie Njanja scored a front-page Daily Nation feature about Kenya's plan to roll out the #HPV #cervicalcancer vaccine, and the protests surrounding it. So here's my #WednesdayWisdom : Wherever you are, and what ever field you're in, keep planting seeds. You never know where or when they will sprout. #globalhealth #globalhealthisourhealth #publichealth #publichealthjournalism #Africanjournalists #Africanjournalism …see more
As Day 1 of The Aspen Institute #AspenIdeasHealthFestival begins, I can't help reflecting on the mind-boggling experience of co-facilitating a pre-Festival #IdeasIncubatorEvent . Not to get too giddy about it, but being privy to #globalhealth policy and practice discussions at this level is beyond astonishing to me! I was in the same incubator group as the Former Minister of Health for #Botswana and current Executive Secretary of the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) Joy Phumaphi , among other high-profile participants! I helped develop the idea to support global #nursing and #midwifery that was presented to a distinguished panel including former Health Minister of #Rwanda Agnes Binagwaho and former U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman! And today, I am roaming from venue to venue listening to brilliant minds share insights on urgent #healthissues like #reproductivehealth , #affordablehousing , #nurseentrepreneurship and #patientexperience . (And in this very moment, I realize that I have become a " #GlobalHealthNerd . “ I can live with it.) #Aspen #AspenIdeas #ALMA #AspenIdeasHealth #AspenIdeasFestival #RockyMountainHigh #HealthEquity #HealthForAll #communicator #facilitator #mediaconsulting …see more

Reverend Jesse L. Jackson Sr.'s eloquent #NewYearsDay message in The New York Times offers a clue about why I'm feeling so energized and hopeful at the start of 2019. This year marks the 400th anniversary of the presence of Africans on American soil. I am part of a continuous lineage of horror, brutality, struggle, triumph, hope and courage that endured even when all the forces of the Universe seemed aligned to terminate our existence. I am here to help declare our strength and our dreams. God let me live to see another year, and I will make the most of it, in the name of those "20 frightened, bewildered and beleaguered Africans arrived in Jamestown, Va., as prizes that had been pirated from Spanish ships on the open seas." I vow to honor that journey, and that of the millions of others who perished at sea, and under the whip, and after the rapes, and after the psychological terror. They paid the price for my journey. #EmancipationDay #400Years #Endurance #Persistence #StrengthCourageAndWisdom #AfricanAmericans https://lnkd.in/enXpBE5 …see more

Trust me, I've ridden this merry-go-round called Life long enough to heartily agree with Liz Ryan 's column: You are always, ALWAYS more successful than you think. It's all about shifting your focus from what's wrong to what's right, from your weaknesses to your strengths. It's about being kind and patient with yourself. It's about hanging on, until you turn that corner. It's out there. Believe me. I turned it a few times myself, and some wonderfully affirming surprises were waiting for me. Thanks for the reminder, Liz. …see more
