For #MondayMotivation , I woke up thinking about #creativity and how I could boost my own levels. Then I opened my LinkedIn app, and the first post I saw was from Mantoe Phakathi , a communication specialist and #climatechange expert from #eSwatini (formerly #Swaziland ). Not only am I inspired by the beautiful craft basket made of recycled newspapers, but I’m impressed by Mantoe’s skillful linking of the creativity of #womenentrepreneurs to their role in community #innovation and #sustainability around #climatechangemitigation . So I’m shifting into high gear this week. I’ll be relying on creativity to get me through these next few weeks, as I prepare for a new chapter in my career. #Africa #globaldevelopment #crafts #tradefairs #internationaltrade #arts #recycling #recycledmaterials …see more
Mama always made sure we had magazines at home. We might not have had a lot of food at times, but there would always, always be a Time Magazine , or a Newsweek , or an Ebony, or a Life. And yes, even Jet Magazine. Every now and then, there would even be a National Geographic , when the people whose house she cleaned were finished with them. I often tell people that I do most of my living for the foremothers. I'm constantly aware of how privileged I am to be able to walk through doors that were permanently closed to them. Like today, when I walked through the doors of National Geographic Headquarters in DC. I'll be spending the next few months working on a story for their January 2019 issue. And in my mind, I can see my mother's eyes widen, and her jaw drop at that little piece of news. It was hard to impress Eloise Jones, but this would have done the trick. But it was all because of her, taking us to the library as soon as we could walk, insisting on books and reading and newspapers and magazines. I was an explorer long before today, because Mama opened up the world for me. #humbled #journalism …see more

Time is the most valuable thing we have. How we spend ours is up to us...but should we waste others'? And what should we read into it when others waste ours? In an anecdote about a large investment bank, a partner called a meeting for new graduates at 5pm, only to turn up at 10. The lesson was about patience in the client service business...'to wait patiently for those who are more important than you'. I have done my fair share of waiting for clients. I have also done so with family and friends, but eventually brought it up with them and come up to an acceptable agreement. How do you feel about punctuality? Do you feel it's about respecting others? Is it a power game? Any other thoughts? …see more

Incredibly interesting how much is being made of FedEx "breaking up" with Amazon and how this is bad for Amazon. Realistically, Amazon will look at this as an opportunity to further streamline logistics and innovate to further cut shipping costs, while other retailers are taking on additional debt. Whoever thinks that Amazon didn't think of every single possible outcome of how it (the company) and their customers could actually benefit from this deal doesn't actually know Amazon. They will innovate their way out, onward and forward with a smile. …see more
Here's a novel idea: Companies stop paying executives millions of dollars to quietly leave because they sexually harass women (and men in some instances), and instead actually have HR and Legal do their jobs and fire them in disgrace, and prosecute them to the full extent of the law if applicable. Wouldn't that be great? …see more
