While trust may take years to cultivate, it can be destroyed in an instant. One lie can negate years of truth-telling; a single harsh criticism can change a relationship forever. Of course, mistakes will be made. So, when others fall, help them up. If you keep your own failings in mind, you’ll find it easier to encourage and build up rather than dishearten and tear down. By choosing to focus on the positive, skillfully sharing your own experience, or simply reminding the person that everyone has a bad day, you’ll not only make the best of a bad situation—you’ll win others’ trust, and you’ll inspire them to be the best version of themselves. Usually, they’ll be more than willing to return the favor. —Excerpted from my new book: "EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence." https://amzn.to/2sxFLho #EmotionalIntelligence #leadership #management #PersonalDevelopment #BestAdvice #BusinessIntelligence #careers #culture #EQApplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

How can you continue showing empathy to others without burning yourself out? The key is balance. Let’s say your spouse comes home after a bad day at work. But you had a horrible day, too. You feel in no shape to offer comfort or empathy; in fact, you’re craving it yourself. In this situation, you might say something like: “I’m so sorry to hear you had a tough day; mine was really bad, too. Can we just take some time to relax (or exercise, or have a nice dinner together)? Maybe later we can go for a walk and talk about it all.” This type of response clearly states your own needs while kindly addressing the needs of your partner. And while it only takes a few seconds to say, it can greatly affect how the next few hours, or even days, play out. You can read more about developing emotionally intelligent empathy in Ch 5 of my new book, "EQ Applied: The Real-World Guide to Emotional Intelligence": https://amzn.to/2sxFLho #Empathy #EmotionalIntelligence #BestAdvice #leadership #management #relationships #PersonalDevelopment #EQ #EQApplied #MakeEmotionsWorkForYouNotAgainstYou …see more

We hear a lot about the "need for empathy." But what is empathy, exactly? Psychologists Daniel Goleman and Paul Ekman break down the concept into the following three categories. COGNITIVE EMPATHY is the ability to understand how a person feels and what they might be thinking. Cognitive empathy makes us better communicators, because it helps us relay information in a way that best reaches the other person. EMOTIONAL EMPATHY (also known as affective empathy) is the ability to share the feelings of another person. Some have described it as “your pain in my heart.” This type of empathy helps you build emotional connections with others. COMPASSIONATE EMPATHY (also known as empathic concern) goes beyond simply understanding others and sharing their feelings: it actually moves us to take action, to help however we can. But what does real-life empathy look like? And how can we develop it? It’s a pleasure to share “Work Simply, Remotely,” a bi-weekly newsletter for leaders to learn how they can cultivate an engaged, high-performance workforce, one where workers can leverage their productivity strengths to work simply. An agile and productive workforce is essential now because two epidemics currently ravage the workplace: COVID-19 and disengagement. It’s tempting to think the COVID caused disengagement, however employee disengagement was pervasive before the pandemic. According to Gallup’s 2019 State of the American Workplace report, 65% of the United States workforce is disengaged. Endless meetings, Zoom fatigue, no boundary between work and home, the increased pressure on parents to assume the roles of teacher, employer, and caregiver; and a wave of economic and health uncertainty have all exacerbated the disengagement epidemic. If companies want to profit, maintain customer satisfaction, ensure market leadership, and increase productivity, employee engagement needs to be the number one focus. But, how do we do this in an evolving workplace? We will explore this together. Please subscribe below and leave a comment with your questions on how to build an engaged workforce! #remoteworking #remoteworkforce #engagedemployees #engagedworkforce #WorkingSimply …see more
