I was talking to a friend who told me that they feel trapped. I suggested forward movement as a potential cure. When I'm not doing as much as I know I can to propel myself forward it makes me feel bad. A little positive activity in the right direction can give your confidence a boost. Hustle. Try new things. Build a foundation. At the end of the day we are all responsible for ourselves. …see more

Just finished watching a powerful video highlighting the #maternalmortality crisis for #AfricanAmerican women. It's part of the #SaveOurMoms Campaign, a collaboration between MTV , VH-1 , Christy Turlington's Every Mother Counts and the #BlackMamasMatterAlliance . Narrated by actress/writer/producer #LenaWaithe , the video and the campaign are powerful reminders that we can't take #maternalhealth and #reproductivejustice for granted in America and around the world. Awareness, education and advocacy are all critical components of the strategy to save mothers' lives. Spread the word about this important new campaign. #globalhealth #reproductivehealth #womenandgirls #birthequity #midwives #doulas #midwivessavelives …see more

May 1st is "International Workers Day," and I'd like to pay tribute to #CommunityHealthWorkers around the world. They selflessly work long hours for little or no pay to serve the poorest, hardest to reach, most vulnerable people on the planet. They are God's grace in action, and I was so proud to meet, interview and befriend some of them during my time in East Africa. Here's the story of Consolata Agunga in #Kenya, who goes door to door in her village seeking out people who need health care...and receives $30 a month. Attending the WFAE 90.7fm “Charlotte Talks” event, “A Public Conversation on Building an Inclusive City: Charlotte’s AFrican American Leaders Share Their Visions.” It’s a fascinating time for me to be living here, as a journalist and an African American woman—for a lot of reasons. For example, for the first time in the City’s history, many of the key city leaders are African American....Mayor Vi Lyles , City Manager Marcus Jones, Police Chief Kerr Putney and District Attorney Spencer Merriweather III, to name a few. But Charlotte still has so many challenges—ranking dead last in social mobility among major cities, social segregation, dwindling affordable housing, inadequate public transportation . There have been a lot of important conversations since I arrived a year and a half ago. I hope to be here long enough to see significant progress in the City of Charlotte . #Charlotte #WFAEPubCon …see more

6.6 million people filed claims for unemployment benefits last week. For perspective, that's twice as many as the week before. It's nearly *10 times* as many as the previous record, set back in 1982. Over the past two weeks, nearly 10 million Americans have filed unemployment claims, worse than the worst 15-week stretch of the 2008-9 recession. The numbers are staggering. But behind every one is a human story. In The New York Times today, Patricia Cohen and I tried to tell some of those stories, to show how the economic damage from the #coronavirus is spreading beyond travel and tourism to affect every corner of American life. Please read, and if you have a story of your own to share, reach out. #unemployment #recession #economy …see more
Future-proofing vital infrastructure, like the world’s largest global payments network from the threat of cyberattacks, needs more than the latest tech and tools. Visa EVP and Chief Risk Officer Paul Fabara tells me that it also takes a mindset — one in which risk management is everyone’s responsibility, not just one business unit. To make that point, he says at Visa there’s one question that starts and ends every conversation about new programs, products or initiatives that keeps the application of sophisticated tech pointed at finding and fighting fraudsters, well before they’re ready to be found. Here’s what that is. …see more
Today is the first business day of the first week of a new decade that will see the shift from a mobile-centric apps economy to a commerce-centric connected one. There are eight cornerstones of this connected economy — powerful enough to attract the interests and investments of innovators large and small worldwide. Who they are, how they will innovate and where they’ll narrow or expand their focus over the next decade is still very much a work in progress. Something that will be up to each member of the entering Class of 2020 to decide. …see more
Every year, $7.5 billion in out-of-pocket medical bills goes unpaid by patients following hospital care. However, our recent survey of over 2,800 patients finds payment plans can not only offer a flexible avenue to resolving debt, but an opportunity for hospitals to recover losses. The Federal Reserve Faster Payments Task Force released its 64-page report outlining ten recommendations for making payments in the U.S. faster, ubiquitous, safer and interoperable. Three hundred people put a lot of hard work into creating a framework for payments that in principle sounds not all that different than what we have in place today. With one exception — it comes with the Fed having a seat at the table — and maybe even the seat. So why again, do we need an entirely new payments system run by the regulator whose last innovation was …..? …see more
