In Silicon Valley, there’s something called a “leaky bucket business.” Users go in, users leak out. Back in the late-2000s, I saw this all the time. A company would pop up out of nowhere and overnight, they’d have millions of users. Some of these companies would succeed and build sustainable business models, but most wouldn’t. They’d have tons of users, but they couldn’t retain them for very long. It was around this time when I realized exactly how important it was to hook users to healthy habits. I could see that habit formation would become increasingly important. I explain more in the clip below 👇 #Hooked #ProductDesign #UX …see more

NEVER accept complacency and the "We've always done it this way" mentality. That type of thinking does nothing other than choke innovation and induce a race to bankruptcy. Whether you're an upstart company challenging an incumbent industry giant, or an individual contributor wondering why something still works the way it does when in reality it doesn't "work" at all anymore, always challenge the status quo. That is how you win. And run, don't walk, from managers/leaders/companies where doing that is frowned upon. #leadership #dobetter …see more

When Visa launched in 1958, the same year NASA was founded, it was called BankAmericard and was an experimental Californian offering. Fast forward many leaps for mankind later, and Visa is the largest payments network in the world connecting billions of cards to tens of millions of businesses worldwide. Visa EVP Bill Sheedy tells me that the company’s just getting warmed up. As payments are increasingly the foundation of businesses, Visa’s next mission, he says, is to cement its role as the platform that allows others to innovate powerful commerce experiences. …see more
#MothersDay isn't easy for all. For some, they have lost their mothers recently or long ago. For others, their mother abandoned or abused them. For others, their mother is sick or dying or non-supportive. And for some mothers, their children have abandoned them or lost interest in them. For some mothers, they are at odds with their children. For some mothers, their children think they are too old or too burdensome or too difficult. And, some father's don't see any value in celebrating their wives as "mothers" -- sad too. Let's celebrate w/ caution + sensitivity. Not everyone is celebrating. …see more

Is Remote Work Here to Stay? It surely seems like it! Brynjolfsson, who studied intersection of technology & economy for years argues a few interesting points that are worth attention (link to the full NPR article is below): 1) There's a lot of inertia in the way people work and it's quite hard to change the processes, the culture, the training, and the types of work. Unless there's a “SHOCK”, most people will tend to continue to do things the old way. In fact, pandemic seems to be the shock needed to push the world to “remote work” almost overnight. 2) Based on data, there’s a Productivity J-Curve when companies adopt new technologies and processes. First, there will be dip in productivity; then with further investments, adjustments, and adoptions there will be significant gains. So there could be more benefits of remote work to come when as individuals, organizations, and industries we nail #remotework . #futureofwork #workingremotely #productivity https://lnkd.in/gC3n2Y5 …see more
Why Are Animals Still Used by the FDA? Dogs and primates are still used as disposable test subjects, confined to small pens, in labs, subjected to all kinds of experiments. I’m very (very) happy to learn that the FDA is making important progress to find alternative approaches to studying and testing new drugs and vaccines. While I understand the historic role animals have had as “lab rats,” there are simply too many options available now (like sophisticated computer-based modeling) to warrant the use of animals in scientific experimentation. If we view ourselves as a kind and decent Society, then we must support the move towards banning animal-testing. If animals could talk, what do you think they’d want? Go ask your own dog or cat how they might feel about being poked and prodded and kept in a pen their whole lives! Selected Excerpt: "The truth is that, for scientific, ethical and economic reasons, animal experimentation is incredibly wasteful and needs to go the way of the dinosaur," he said. "Technologies that replace the use of animals are more effective." …see more
Who Owns Health Care? Doctors? The Government? Hospitals? Big Health Systems? Insurance Companies? Employers? Amazon? You—The Patient? Answer: None of the above. According to Modern Healthcare... Regardless of who ‘should’ own Healthcare (and trust me, it won’t be patients), the group that’s moving into the ‘top spot’ is Private Equity firms (PE). They are buying as much of Healthcare as possible ( doctor groups, hospitals, lab services...) Huh? Never heard of PE? Private equity typically refers to investment funds organized as limited partnerships that are not publicly traded and whose investors are typically large institutional investors, or wealthy individuals. And you thought Healthcare was already complex (and impersonal) before... Selected Excerpt: “We have to decide whether the goal of a healthcare system is to increase profits, because private equity firms are selecting those parts of healthcare where they can see a profit because their goal is to make profit,” AMA President Dr. Barbara McAneny said. “The consolidation of various parts of the healthcare industry has been shown to increase prices and decrease choice, and if you’re lucky, quality stays about the same.” …see more
