The The National Institutes of Health is launching a new collaboration to develop gene-based cures for #HIV and #sicklecell disease on a global scale. After decades of promise, there are finally gene-based treatments for diseases like leukemia - but these require complex medical facilities which are often only available in wealthy countries. This new investment not only focuses gene-based research on diseases that have a major #publichealth impact but also aims to create treatments that are affordable, safe, effective and scalable in low-resource settings. Congratulations to Duke University Senior John Lu, who was just named a Marshall Scholar. Lu is a 2017 Barry M. Goldwater Scholar, a Duke Faculty Scholar award winner and a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. During his undergrad years at Duke, Lu spent two summers in global health interventions and policy research -- one addressing #schistosomiasis in Tanzania and the other immunization policy in Ghana. He created and taught a student-led “house course” for Duke students on neglected tropical diseases, founded an undergraduate global health journal, and was chosen as one of eight student board members to advise the Sabin Vaccine Institute END7 campaign on its efforts to increase world-wide student engagement.
