Following a successful public offering, USAT CEO Steve Herbert tells me traditional retail is undergoing a metamorphosis, but he doesn’t think people want brick-and-mortar to die - they just need it to get on a (self-service) level. Details: http://bit.ly/2v1SGen …see more

Uber filed its widely anticipated S-1 last Thursday, and Lyft 's stock price took a hit. Investors could have a little buyer’s remorse, while pundits are fretting over the complexity of making an apples-to-apples comparison. They should stop trying, and recognize that #Uber is to #Lyft what Amazon is to eBay : a whole different kind of platform that could pose a short, medium and long-term threat. Here’s why... …see more

We have a challenge today, this month and next month, not just to move forward but to reflect on who we are as individuals and why we are so divided a nation. Both President Obama and Senator Clinton (although she looked so sad and hurt) spoke about helping the next leader with a peaceful transition. Democracy requires us to pass power. We can and must fight for what we value but we also need to role model democracy at its best: respectful disagreement and non-violent protest. We must keep our commitment to those in need and bring our best selves to the table to work despite obstacles. …see more

Quality Ratings For Hospitals? Just like restaurants need to show their A-F food safety ratings, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) is considering making hospitals display their quality and safety scores on hospital’s websites. I say ‘It’s about time!’ Don’t you want to easily know if your preferred hospital has high or low scores for infections or hip replacements or heart attacks? Even though you can find all this currency (think HospitalCompare.com ) it’s still a bit of a hunt to find the data you most want. So why not have hospitals display their scores? Good ones will be proud to do so, and poorly performing hospitals? Well perhaps not so much—but the consumer still has every right to know. Selected Excerpt: “CMS requested feedback on ways patients can have better access to quality data including the value of providers displaying information related to the volume and complication rates of procedures...” …see more

Did You Know? That as of Jan. 1, in the name of transparency, all hospitals are required to post their list prices on line? Yes it’s true. What’s also true is you’ll be hard-pressed to figure out, in advance, what a medical procedure will actually cost. Having a baby? If you do it quickly (fast birth) rather than a slow labor, you’ll save upwards of $7,000.00 according to this article...but that’s not all the fees! Also added to a regular birth are things like room charges for you and baby, medication charges and so on... But don’t let all this intimidate you—simply call the hospital and ask your questions and make sure to get a good answer. If you need guidance or advocacy, give me a shout— Selected Excerpt: “From a practical standpoint, I'm not sure how useful this information is, What an individual pays to [the] hospital is going to be based on what their insurer covers." …see more

Warehousing Our Aging Parents and Grandparents. While the Healthcare industry has been very strong at making hospital admissions safe, we have not been nearly so focused on our nursing home industry. Quality, safety, and-yes even dignity and respect- should be absolute core tenets of performance in nursing homes. Nothing less should be tolerated. And yet just the opposite is true—and has been for some time now. Frankly we should all be very uncomfortable knowing our senior citizens are receiving sloppy and undignified care in their final years. What does this say about our ‘Family Values?’ Selected Excerpt: “Medicare has lowered its star ratings in one out of 11 of the nation’s nursing homes — almost 1,400 of them — because they were inadequately staffed with registered nurses... Researchers have repeatedly found lower staffing in for-profit facilities, which make up 70 percent of the industry.” …see more

Talent or Luck? Which would you choose if you could only have one? Me? I’d choose luck any day of the week! Why, my talent might only be singular but Luck—why Luck is indiscriminate so I could be lucky at work or my career or in winning the lotto or even lucky in love! After reading this article I must confess that I feel better about the inherent randomness in life. This article also gives all of us “permission” to give ourselves a break if, say, our career isn’t going exactly the way we had hoped... I mean, maybe it’s not about talent but rather it’s about not being lucky! Thank you Vasant for bringing this article to my attention. …see more

I'm mixed about this piece: on one hand I say "Hat's Off" to anyone or any formalized group of people trying to 'think about making dying better.' For whatever the reasons, we do not like talking about The Dying Process....and yet we all go through some form of death--and die. On the other hand, we know not all death can be planned-having worked in a busy ER, I saw people die daily even though their plan for the day was to get to work, or drive to school, or go hang out with friends...what about this "death and dying process?" And, once you "package and brand" (or should I say "re-brand") The Dying Process, how will you make sure all this new wisdom moves out of the fancy world of Silicon Vally and into the hands of every day people? I wish you well AND I hope you routinely share--for free--all the tools and knowledge you are acquiring... because as you say, this affects us all and as such, any "solution " should be viewed as a public good. …see more

I know that I'm naïve sometimes (no, it's not the same as being a techno-optimist) but please explain to me why a hacker would attack a vaccine supply chain. “Advanced insight into the purchase and movement of a vaccine that can impact life and the global economy is likely a high-value and high-priority nation-state target.” Why and how would a government, a competitor or a bad actor benefit from it? It's getting more serious. Even though large-scale cyber attacks over the past few years were incidental, cybercriminals have started to attack hospitals knowingly. As they’re even weaker during the pandemic, they pay the ransom to get their systems unlocked, even though officials urge them not to. This way, they paint a target on their back. Increased cyberattacks call for a serious upgrade in the approach of handling healthcare data.
