Surprise! And Not In A Good Way.... You might think that when you go in for surgery at your favorite hospital, they have all the staff and expertise to actually ‘do’ your surgery...but you’d be wrong! Turns out—kinda on a whim—the surgeon can decide to add independent consultants to help him/her with the surgery! And those added consultants—called surgical assistants—don’t have a medical or nursing license...And, they are often not covered by insurance. So the doctors and surgical assistants make more money, and the patient is stuck with a big bill. I can’t imagine going to a surgeon who needs to add outside help to perform any surgery—hospitals have very strong OR certified special nurses and techs who are experts in operating rooms...and they are covered by insurance! So what’s going on? Another way private equity companies are ripping off the Healthcare Patient. Some of the larger surgical assistants Private equity firms often target segments of the health care system where patients have little choice in who provides their care. The private equity business models include keeping such helpers out-of-network so they can bill patients for larger amounts than they could negotiate from insurance companies. Take Away: Ask if ALL of your surgical team are in-network. …see more

The Joy of Outdoors I was a chubby girl. Of course others told me so, maybe not in direct ways. For example, I was always picked last for group activities. So I started running. At age 13. It would be the second biggest transformative event of my youth—the first being a 10 day backpacking trip I went on at age 14, sponsored by my school. Ever since then, I’ve benefited wildly. Running and hiking have given me fresh air, time for reflection, and a better cardiovascular system. And while I joined a gym years ago, the second the weather turns nice, I’m outside. So now that gyms are closed, I’m not sure I’m going back. Being ‘forced’ to spend time outside is, well, a gem. Seeing blue skies, noticing how the grass shifts in the breeze, seeing new flowers is the stuff of real-life. …see more

The Future of Healthcare is Here Now there is an ‘end-to-end’ enterprise telehealth solution for all care environments. Meaning... One company, Teladoc, can offer a single solution for providing a entire virtual care strategy covering the full range of acuity – from critical to chronic to everyday care! Now, I’m not promoting this company (or any when I write!) but I am promoting the reality of an alternative reality for how patients access and receive medical and nursing care. The promise here is that the entire medical and patient ‘workforce’ will be worlds apart when giving and getting care. Providers might be in their kitchen, wearing pajamas while virtually treating patients in the ICU...patients might be in their living room while getting medical attention. But, as we all know, there is more to high quality care than only access to healthcare professionals (although important); Having your care provider know you as a person with unique goals and hopes when you go through medical challenges is also critical. And honestly, I’m not sure how well ‘virtual assistants (or assistance) can hep with this! Selected Excerpt: According to 2019 JPMorgan research, 40% of hospitals surveyed reported planning to increase their budgets for telemedicine solutions. …see more

I've done 50 keynotes in the last 6 months so I’m reflecting a bit on what keynotes will be like in the new “never normal”. My take so far: Virtual keynotes don’t work at large expos with 1,000s of people and exhibitors. At such events, we’d like to immerse ourselves in a different world. We’d like to see and experience the venue, thus bringing such events to a single screen (with break-out rooms or not) is a complete waste. Whereas it’s not worth organizing events in the physical space with 150 attendees or less. I believe these won’t be coming back and I’d strongly agree there’s no need. I can’t wait to hop on a plane for large-scale events all over the world, but I’ll be happy to continue giving smaller keynotes from the comfort and professionality of my new studio: it’s cozier, it creates a more honest environment and I even get better questions! What’s your take about events in the new never normal? #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #speaker #keynote #speakerlife …see more

Before the pandemic, we often talked about how the access to advanced digital health technologies can create an ethical gap between people. The wealthiest 1% Americans already live 10 years longer than the bottom 1% and that’s only about access to care. Imagine how this gap widens if the issue becomes focused on the access to advanced digital health technologies. We cannot allow that to happen. Now that we use telemedicine everywhere, it's time to also make it equally accessible to everyone. #telemedicine #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology …see more

Measuring heart rate by smartwatches and fitness trackers seem to not always work on darker skin or tattoos. I knew of this issue and similar biases in A.I., also highlighted in The Medical Futurist e-book ‘A Guide to Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare’. I’m really glad Nicole Mpofu reached out to me and raised my attention to how they’re trying to tackle this issue Codethink . Their team is working on designing a fully open-source research device for experimenting with shining light into skin and detecting the light that reflects, gets absorbed and passes through. The kind of technology that is widely deployed for measuring heart rates. Most of my upcoming keynotes have been canceled or postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak, so I present more and more online. The experience isn't the same as speaking in person, but this time it's the smartest and most practical alternative. In the meantime, we have completed my keynote speaker page where you can get a glimpse into how such a presentation usually looks, feels, and sounds. I included some materials that you can access even if you don't have the chance to attend any events in person. I hope you'll like it! #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #fromchancetochoice #speaker #keynote #speakerlife …see more

The essence of digital health from a recent paper of The Medical Futurist Institute: "Through the cultural transformation called digital health, the hierarchy of traditional medicine is transforming into an equal-level partnership between patients and caregivers. Besides many disruptive technologies, AI has the biggest potential to support this transition by analyzing the vast amounts of data patients and healthcare institutions record in every moment. By taking away the repetitive parts of a physician’s job, it might lead to being able to spend more precious time with their patients, improving the human touch. However, AI can only fulfill its mission if it remains a safe, efficient, and proven aid in treating patients and improving healthcare." https://lnkd.in/gRGWDxt #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #TMFI #research …see more

The Commonwealth Bank Australia asked me about my long-term vision of healthcare. It was a fun discussion. Sensors, gadgets, data analytics will take care of you and will let you know if there's something to take care of." #health #healthcare #future #ai #technology …see more
