Headed to read Lady Lucy's Quest at Democracy Prep in SE D.C. Look forward to being w/ Grades K --2 and their teachers. Early ed matters. Reading matters. Buckets. Educational gap will not close if we do not start early (and often). Take a day and go read to young kids at a school, after-school program or shelter near you. It will make your heart flutter and will reinforce our obligation to insure the next generation is in good hands. Some of my best days since Lady Lucy's Quest was published has been with kids -- and seeing their joy and growing engagement. …see more
I get worried about our world and think at times that it is falling off its axis. I worry about positive role models. I worry about how people treat each other. But I had a treat yesterday -- reading Lady Lucy's Quest for girls at the Girls Inc. of Greater Capital Region. Gives me hope that we will have a generation that is kind and bold and proud and brave and smart and caring. Kids and staff seemed to enjoy the event. I did for sure. …see more

Thinking of Starting--or Re-Starting Working Out? It's Springtime and which means its time to think about bicycling, upcoming trips to our beautiful National Parks, summer picnics. Which means feeling physically fit, 'light' and well, happy. I've started, stopped and re-started working-out too many times to count over the 40 years I've been exercising. Here's what I've learned: 1. Re-Set To Zero: Know you will start, stop and need to re-start exercising many, many times. I think of this as 'resetting to zero.' 2. Get into the Work-Out Mindset: Be kind to yourself and set winning 'goals' at the beginning of your 'work-out season.' 3. Feel Successful Each Time You Work-Out: It’s about the process of ‘doing’ so applaud yourself for ‘doing’ rather than judging ‘how much or how little’ you did. 4. Figure Out ‘Why’ You Want To Exercise: This becomes important to staying fit. 5. Develop a Personal Matra: By coming up with a ‘saying’ that you can repeat to yourself when you are working-out, that helps a lot. When I used to train for marathons, I would repeat to myself ‘The Mind Gives Out Before The Body.’ This is a good, comprehensive article on tips, ideas, strategies to help everyone start—or continue along their healthcare journey. …see more
Do you have health insurance? Better get going if you don’t! Please don’t “go bare” or, without insurance... Enrollment for ACA health care plans ends on December 15, after a dramatically shortened time frame and minimal government sponsored awareness campaigns. Would you have thought that a mixed reality device could have a role in protecting the healthcare staff from exposure to COVID? I haven't. And now a study in JMIR looked into what happens if the staff starts using it not only as a sort of shield but also as a telemedicine tool, which makes in-person visits less frequent. "This technology-led pilot project has demonstrated that wearable MR devices may have a role to play in protecting staff and reducing PPE use during a pandemic response. The use of the HoloLens2 led to an 83.1% reduction in PPE use and a 51.5% reduction in the time spent by clinical staff in high-risk areas." I'm wondering what other unusual/unexpected uses of digital health devices we will see being analyzed in the fight against the pandemic. Can you name a more ambitious, innovative, beneficial, practical and forward-looking digital health project than this? Rwanda is one of my favorite role models, where Zipline 's medical drones deliver blood and medical supplies to even the most inaccessible areas. This is just one example of how it's becoming a leading digital health country. We have dedicated a full article to these truly exciting developments, and this video is a great illustration of them! https://lnkd.in/dnwswBU #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #fromchancetochoice #Rwanda #Zipline #medicaldrones #drones …see more
In this video, I speculate how COVID-19 will end based on the analyses of public health experts. I also discuss what it would mean for us and how different it will be going back to our life which is not going to be the same. Also, a few interesting news and developments. Reporters at STAT News tested several chatbots that were specifically designed for answering patients' questions whether they have the coronavirus and the results varied greatly. With the same symptoms, they got different results such as there is probably no risk and start at-home quarantine immediately. There are A.I.-based technologies that could make contact tracing much faster (it usually takes days) and could send a warning to people's phones who have been in the proximity of a patient who was just testedt positive. While it would significantly help the fight against the pandemic, it would also be a privvacy nightmare. Digital health is still quite new in the branches of medical social sciences. Every book that helps understand better how facts change and how old paradigms are replaced by new ones is a huge addition to our research. That's why I liked The Half-Life of Facts. It described how facts and knowledge change over time such as how smoking went from being recommended by doctors to proving it causes diseases. It's a must-read in the age of fake news. #themedicalfuturist #digitalhealth #future #healthcare #medicine #technology #book #reading #read #halflifeoffacts #fakenews …see more
