We need your help! Two weeks ago, Close the Gap Foundation asked low-income high school students across the U.S. a simple question: If you can request anything to help you learn during this challenging time, what would you ask for? Over six hundred students responded: Pocket Wifi to access the internet. Chromebooks to submit assignments. Papers and pencils to do math homework. Acrylic paint for mental health. The full list in the comments section. Here are two of their stories: ✏️ From Virginia, a student simply asked for paper and pencils to do homework. He once received such supplies from his teacher at school. Now, with both his parents laid off, he no longer has access to such basic essentials. 💻 From Kentucky, a student asked for a Chromebook to share with her 5 siblings because once the school year is over, she will have to return the borrowed laptop. This means she and her 5 siblings will not be able to attend summer classes or submit homework. How you can help us bridge the #digitalgap : Despite already setting up a $2,100 COVID-19 Resilience Fund, we're short still of the $125,000 supplies requested. Tag someone in your network who are willing to connect us with their company's social impact/ESG team to partner and donate these essential supplies. #plusonepledge …see more

"Toxic." That's the Oxford Dictionary's 2018 word of the year. Runners-up include "techlash" and, sadly, "gaslighting." Yikes. Each fall, Oxford selects a word that they believe reflects “the ethos, mood or preoccupations” of a particular year. It's downright depressing to think that "toxic" sums up how we felt about 2018. What if 2019 was the year our "ethos, mood or preoccupations" at work and in our communities shifted to words like: *collaboration *trust *innovation *diversity *empowerment *equality *inclusion *respect I can dream, right? And you can too. What word would you add to that list? …see more

A new line of action figures and toys was launched by Mattel under the hashtag #ThankYouHeroes . "The 16 action figures ($20 each) of doctors, nurses, EMTs and delivery drivers come in various genders and skin colors." The net proceeds ($15) from each sale will go to #FirstRespondersFirst . I thought at first -- yikes. Is this merely capitalizing on the hero narrative we see around first responders in lieu of what they need (PPE!) In a sense, yes. Is this helping? Maybe it helps parents help their children navigate the dynamics of the pandemic. Can the company do more? They are: "These new Fisher-Price toys are part of what Mattel calls its new "Play It Forward" toy initiative to support communities in times of need. Mattel also has donated cloth masks to medical personnel and is now producing 500,000 face shields to donate." It ultimately begs the question: what is the role of a toy company in a pandemic? How do we delineate between pandering to consumers' desire to thank first responders, and meaningful support? Those answers are unclear to me - it seems to have "checked all the boxes" (even around #diversity , hey) but leaves a strange taste. What do you think? Thanks to Alicia Esposito for finding!
