In Healthcare, There Are Now Prices Listed Do you ever go to a restaurant or hardware store and buy things without knowing what it will cost? Absolutely not. There are always prices listed. Until now, when you go see your doctor or go to the hospital for a scheduled procedure, consumers never (ever) knew what it would cost. And if you ever asked anyone working there what something would cost, they could never tell you—because they didn’t know either! Now consumers and patients get to see a price list for services before they are stuck with a bill! Just like absolutely every other thing— Under the rule, hospitals must list standard prices for 300 “shoppable services,” as well as the lowest prices they will accept from consumers paying out of pocket. Guess whose unhappy? The new price transparency rule is receiving tremendous pushback from the hospital industry. Guess whose happy? All of us that need health care services. If you are ‘senior,’ and you need surgery, read this! Recently published in JAMA Surgery, has found that frail, older adults are more likely than other patients to die after even supposedly minor procedures — and even when the surgery goes well, without complications. Frail, older patients frequently undergo such operations, which surgeons tend to see as routine, simple fixes — but may not be. “Our data indicate that there are no low-risk procedures among patients who are frail,” according to new research. Screening patients for frailty may allow those facing greater risk to begin several weeks of so-called pre-habilitation, to improve their nutrition and endurance. Far the most cited paper of The Medical Futurist Institute in recent years is this one: The role of artificial intelligence in precision medicine. It describes that through the cultural transformation called digital health, the hierarchy of traditional medicine is transforming into an equal-level partnership between patients and caregivers. Besides many disruptive technologies, A.I. has the biggest potential to support this transition by analyzing the vast amounts of data patients and healthcare institutions record in every moment. By taking away the repetitive parts of a physician’s job, it might lead to being able to spend more precious time with their patients, improving the human touch.
