Our environment shapes our behavior. The things around us can have a large impact on our wellbeing and our ability to stay focused -- especially when it comes to a work environment. One of the things I discovered during my research for Indistractable is that workplace distraction is a symptom of cultural dysfunction. When people talk about being distracted at work, there’s always a much deeper set of problems. Maybe you have coworkers who are constantly interrupting you or a boss who won’t stop micromanaging you. Even if you’re indistractable, a toxic workplace culture can be bad for your health. There are two factors in a workplace that are linked to depression and anxiety disorder: high expectations coupled with low control. Having a lot expected of us without any autonomy literally drives us crazy. And what do we do then? We look for escape! People distract themselves from the nonstop, pointless emails -- and then they distract the people around them! To address workplace distraction, we have to look at workplace culture. #Indistractable #Culture #WFH #MentalHealth …see more

Is technology making us more distracted than ever before? Before I answer that, let me tell you a quick story. When I was an undergraduate at Emory University, the internet was still new (and slow) and there was no such thing as apps. This was years before the first smartphone ever came out. And even back then, I’d often get distracted. A friend might have come up to me while I was studying and asked me something like, “Do you want to play a quick game of ping pong?” It was never just a quick game. We would get sidetracked for hours. Distraction is nothing new. Plato talked about it 2,500 years ago. Yes, games, apps, and technology are designed to be engaging -- but the problem of distraction isn’t new. It’s been around as long as we have. Which is why in order to stay productive, we can’t be “blamers” or “shamers.” We can’t blame tech or shame ourselves for getting distracted. We have to be “claimers”. While the world’s problems aren’t your fault, managing them is your responsibility. What’s been your biggest source of distraction this week? #Indistractable #Responsibility #Tech #ProblemSolving …see more

I recently had the pleasure of speaking with Ozan Varol about his upcoming book, Think Like a Rocket Scientist. In Ozan's own words, the book lays out, "nine simple strategies from rocket science that you can use to make giant leaps in work and life—whether it’s landing your dream job, accelerating your business, or creating the next breakthrough product." One of the more interesting parts of our conversation was learning about his view on the "fail fast, fail often" mantra. When we fail, we tend to assign blame to external factors—customers, competitors, and so on. Instead, Ozan says, we should aim to learn fast, because "failure can be the best teacher if you approach it properly." We also discussed the book writing process, other interesting parts of behavior science, and more. His research and work have also become especially relevant as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic. I've included a link in the comments. Tag a colleague and let me know which part of the interview you found most insightful. #indistractable #thinklikearocketscientist #strategicfailure …see more

I did not imagine myself getting into politics. But if you can, put yourself in the shoes of someone who’s trying to create jobs, then realize that those jobs are going to be wiped out in large numbers and then realize that it’s going to be increasingly disastrous for the country. That’s when I decided to run for president. …see more

Thanks, LinkedIn  for asking me to participate in #YouAsked! The question — how can I get people to trust a young company run by young people? — is one I get asked pretty often. Here's my response: “It can be trying going into a situation where you feel like you may already be at a deficit, but change that thinking. You're passionate about the service you’re providing and you believe in the expertise you're bringing to the table. Let this belief guide your process of reeling in new business. Feel out any concerns they may have by asking powerful questions. Their issues may have nothing to do with age and more about how you're positioning the company's successes. Focus your pitch and select the right successes (no matter how small) and make them sizzle. If they don't go with your company, ask them why so that you can refine your message. The young company, or age difference, might not be the issue at all. If you find out that it is, though, ask your current clients how they overcame that concern and home in on those winning features.” …see more

Are you monetizing your knowledge? We're leaving money on the table because we're not actively creating products that are in demand. You can generate $$ via; 🍗 Digital courses 🍗 Coaching 🍗 Consulting 🍗 eBook 🍗 Membership 🍗 Online community Still, before you jump in and go full force in product developmental mode. Ask yourself this, do you have: - A recognizable reputation - An audience to leverage - Deep credibility in the industry - Demand for your experience or knowledge - The bandwidth to create and iterate? I've been helping many coaches, thought leaders, and experts, the current trend is becoming influencers in your field. No, the influencers I see are more business or B2B with B2C vibes. I'm not referring to Instagrammers, I'm referring to experts who have the knowledge to transfer and share. It's time to extend your brand online. It's time to level up and be relevant. #stringtheory on #personalbranding #b2b #digitalmarketing …see more

Engagement - Eyeballs - You want attention on LinkedIn Our inner ego goes against the bragging ethos. In the world of marketing and content-driven platforms, one also needs to be comfortable selling yourself. Instead of thinking of it as bragging: Think of it as: - a game of attention. - a game of sharing value As a person who been posting regularly (and I grew a following of 62k on LinkedIn). Here are 3 things to consider.... 🍗 Polarising Headline: it's the first line of attention. Think of your email subject lines or a newspaper headings 🍗 Polls are a hyper engagement tool 🍗 Personality/Charisma is required to stand out, to be memorable.
