Work has fundamentally and radically changed. Now is the time to rethink the framework of your relationship with your employer.

On the surface, the Cybertruck launch was a disaster. Even many Tesla fans admitted they thought the new E-Truck was ugly. And after Musk boasted that the truck's windows were practically unbreakable, Tesla lead designer Franz von Holzhausen, um...broke them. But fast forward a bit. Within a week, Cybertruck had won over many of its fiercest detractors. Over 250,000 people were so enamored they were willing to deposit a hundred dollars to be among its first potential owners. So, how do Musk and co. do it? How do they manage to build products that customers are dying to get their hands on? Musk revealed the answer to that question in a recent interview: "A lot of times I think people try to make products that they think others would love but they don't love them themselves. If you don't love the product, you should not expect that others will." One of the best ways to build your emotional intelligence is to practice using your emotional vocabulary. To illustrate... One day you wake up with an intense pain, so you go to the doctor for help. She asks you to describe the pain you’re feeling using any of the following words: sharp, dull, burning, shooting, aching, cramping, gnawing, heavy, splitting, stabbing, nauseating, throbbing, tender. The more specific you get, the easier it will be for your doctor to diagnose the problem and prescribe proper treatment. It works similarly with your emotions: by using specific words to describe your feelings, you can better “diagnose” them—helping you understand where they’re coming from, and why. Are you upset? Angry? Hurt? Betrayed?  By using specific words, you can get to the root cause of your feelings. Need to convince your boss to give you a raise? Try reasoning with empathy. Of course, you COULD go in to your supervisor with guns blazing, detailing your list of accomplishments. You feel this will be extremely convincing. Unbeknownst to you, though, your boss is under fire for being over budget and is willing to do anything to solve this--even downsize the team. Sensing your dissatisfaction, they may decide the easiest option is to cut you. But what if you focused first on getting to know THEIR needs? Through research, you find out their priorities. If you can help them get the department under budget, you're in a much better position to ask for more money. This empathetic approach helps you frame your reasoning to fit your supervisor's perspective, allowing you to brainstorm concrete solutions to their most important problems, which further increases your value in their eyes... How do you even begin to persuade someone who sees the world completely differently than you do? You must provide evidence they're likely to respect. Remember that people differ in background, upbringing, and culture; what one person finds convincing may not work for another. That’s why you must closely examine the arguments of your conversation partner. Ask yourself: • Who influences and inspires them? • What research or sources do they cite? Next, you can seek data and expert opinions from sources they are likely to heed. (Be careful not to misquote or take information out of context, which will erode your credibility.) These efforts are time-consuming and challenging. But it’s a well-spent investment, because it allows you to present evidence in a way that’s more appealing to your partner instead of wasting time on arguments they’re never likely to consider. “From lacking computers to physical space, low-income students are at a disadvantage in online learning.” — Anna North, Vox Through our COVID-19 Resiliency Grants, Close the Gap is bridging the widening #digitaldivide that disproportionately impact low-income communities during this pandemic. This year, we awarded over $2,100 in Chromebooks and school supplies to empower low-income students with distance learning. I'm incredibly pleased we were able to provide four new Chromebooks to students like Madison, Alan, Briana, and Mercedes. We received over 700+ applications asking for a range of school supplies like laptops to everyday essentials such as food/snacks. Our work stop doesn't end here. We're looking to continue this program again next year to help more low-income students bridge the digital divide. I’m very pleased to share our new China Luxury Report 2019: How young Chinese consumers are reshaping global luxury My colleagues at McKinsey surveyed more than 1,000 young Chinese luxury consumers on what makes them tick, unlocking insights into their perceptions of luxury as a form of social capital that distinguishes them from peers in the world’s most populous nation. Our report suggests that by 2025, spending on luxury consumption in China will increase to 1.2 trillion RMB, in the process capturing 65% of additional global growth, and accounting for 40 percent of total global spending.
