Meet my birthday twin and partner in crime Angelique Calvillo ! We both love flower walls, all things Disney, and tea parties. Fun fact - Angelique helped me come up with the idea for my podcast, Sworn Testimonies. She also created my podcast intro music - which I’m obsessed with. If you can’t tell, we love each other a lot, which makes collaboration easy and effortless. We created a podcast course called PMS (podcasting made simple) to walk people through starting their own podcast! My podcast has not only given me a much needed outlet to express myself and tell stories that matter to me, but it also lead to my book publishing deal! The course is comprised of 17 videos, and we cover EVERYTHING - we even tell you what equipment you need, and how to record remotely. Emma Grede has an interesting perspective. What do you think? Is it possible for an African-American woman to act as if race is not an issue in an effort to just "move forward and not give a shit”?
I love this story! When you're passionate about what you do, and adept at telling your story, great things can happen. But you have to put yourself out there. You have to ask for what you want, don't hint. Remember a closed mouth will not get fed. So, prepare to share. Practice your 30 or 60-second elevator or dinner party pitch. It's not always about selling - it's about sharing in a compelling and genuine way. …see more
My National Geographic story about the #muralart project at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Washington, DC has posted, and I’m thinking back to my conversation with Aaron Bryant , a curator at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture . Murals have long been a part of social justice movements in the Black community, Bryant told me. “Starting with the 1967 Wall of Respect in Chicago, that really set off a mural movement in activism, where artists got involved not just with the community, but got the community involved in civic engagement and democracy.” Read my story through this link—-> https://lnkd.in/d_rxqUh And check out some of the fabulous images produced by artists with the PAINTS Institute collective below. Wrap your mind around the start of this story by Abigail R. Esman , about #childmarriage in war-torn #Yemen : "There was no more money. There was only bread and tea for weeks. There was so much hunger, and so many children. "And so the couple agreed to let the man wed their youngest daughter, for a dowry payment they desperately needed in order to feed the rest of their children. "The bride was just 3 years old." This gut-wrenching scenario featured in the Algemeiner Journal Inc highlights the extreme vulnerability of #womenandgirls during #wars , #naturaldisasters and #economiccrises . As difficult as it is to read about the issue, we must keep sounding the alarm to #EndChildMarriage . I can’t stop thinking about the pride and exuberance of last Saturday’s graduation ceremony for 60 young midwives at the Edna Adan Ismail Hospital campus in Hargeisa. The joy in the air, from the new midwives and their families—and Madame Edna herself—was palpable. I'll be posting more photos from the graduation ceremony on my Rachella55 Instagram account. Fascinated by the story of the "Granny Midwives" who birthed untold numbers of babies in the rural South. The tradition of black, lay midwifery dates back to slavery, and was absolutely critical in an environment where racial oppression, poverty and a lack of health care facilities in rural areas led to the deaths of untold women. #MidwivesMatter #InternationalDayoftheMidwife #IDM2018 #globalhealth #maternalhealth #HealthForAll https://lnkd.in/g7uFAZX …see more
